Fed Govt commissioned 50 std gauge locos for China.
This fell through after 20 built.
10 SAR (re-gauged to 5' 3" 740 class)
10 for CR L class.

The L class locos were used on some construction trains and not much else as they were delivered to CR as GM diesel-electric's entered service making the L class surplus. Some were never used.

Rest withdrawn c. 1959.
All scrapped mid 1960s.
Tenders were used on weed killer train.
