Why should I care?

I care because 90% of PhDs go to white people, and faculty of color account for only 3.8% of tenure track positions.
I care because 20% of science graduate students were from URM populations, whereas only 12% of graduate students in the geosciences were from underrepresented groups.

I care because white men & women each comprise ~30% of the U.S. population, white men hold 49& of STEM jobs compared to 18% of white women. The % are also low for black & Hispanic women, who make up 7 & 8% of the population, but hold only 2% of STEM jobs. nsf.gov/statistics/201…
I care because female students are perceived to be less knowledgeable than male students. journals.plos.org/plosone/articl…
I care because women publish less, possibly due to “the Matilda Effect” in which male-authored abstracts are judged to have higher scientific quality than the same female-authored abstracts. Women are also less frequently cited. journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.117…
Look no further than today’s health crisis to see how invisible labor or “woman’s work” crushes the careers of women in science. natureindex.com/news-blog/decl…
I care because in the classroom, women of color have their authority challenged, competency questioned, and scholarly expertise discredited.

I care because recent research highlights how biases against women who identify as lesbian, bisexual, or transgender are particularly strong in STEM environments compared to other occupational fields. @500QueerSci #queerinstem mdpi.com/2076-0760/6/1/…
I care because I, and most women scientists I know, have experience sexual harassment from our male colleagues. blogs.scientificamerican.com/voices/when-it…
So, sir, rocks may not see color, gender or sexual orientation but people most certainly do, and science is made up of people.
As for disability, there has been an incredible effort by people like @BakingSodaVolc to bring equity to the disabled in science. Lots of literature for you to read about how that impacts people earthmagazine.org/article/geolog…
“Nearly 25% of the population has some form of disability. In the geosciences, when we fail to account for the policies/cultures that exclude people with disabilities, to send the message that geoscience careers may not be a welcoming place.” eos.org/opinions/creat…
Numerous studies show that science benefits from diversity and that diversity increases innovation. nature.com/articles/d4158…
But yet- “...this paper finds demographically underrepresented students innovate at higher rates than majority students, but their novel contributions are discounted and less likely to earn them academic positions.” pnas.org/content/117/17…
And before anyone jumps in saying “But I’m color blind” recognize that that statement denies people critical racial and/or cultural identity. mobile.edweek.org/c.jsp?cid=2592…
We need to recognize, accept and validate our differences, allowing people to bring their whole selves to science. Only together can we create a truly great scientific endeavor that will be able to solve our global issues.
Always keep the receipts.
