1) Volcanic activity is not increasing. The news cycle is discussing active volcanoes more. (Frequency Illusion)

2) This article misrepresents info (hopefully unintentionally) from the Smithsonian Volcanoes Program. The article says that ā€œdouble the NORMAL number of volcanoes are currently eruptingā€. Saying that it is double the NORMAL number implies that the current number of currently erupting volcanoes is ABNORMAL.

Itā€™s not.

Hey there SC friends. My DMs are telling me youā€™re a little freaked out - thatā€™s totally understandable!

Many of you have lived there much of your lives and rarely (if ever) felt an earthquake and now youā€™re feeling them often.

This video gives some insight. 1/n Thereā€™s always the possibility of a larger quake - but thatā€™s unlikely. Whatā€™s more likely is that these M1-3s will continue for a while and then slowly taper off.

Nice try but not a great way to stop earthquakes.

(Jk-itā€™s art. atlasobscura.com/places/giant-cā€¦) A giant clothes pin clamps ... While technically this would work, we do have better instruments these days. Image

Police just came to talk with a belligerent man who refused to wear a mask. He was cursing and being rude to the officer. He was walking up and down the line saying ā€œwhy are you here? Why are you bothering to be here?ā€ People nearby say he had a visible camera under his hat. This was the man asking me about my bathroom habits. So the bright side is that now heā€™s gone. The police didnā€™t make him leave. No idea where he went, but heā€™s not near me anymore.

'To the Men Who Burned Witches'

ā€œThere is witchcraft in our blood,
in our bones we carry the magic
that you could not burn away.
You see, fire does not eat fire... Your mother would have taught you that
if the world hadnā€™t convinced her
that despite her body being able
to bring life into this world,
she is not a magical thing.

The @USGS has issued an #earthquake forecast related to seismic activity around the Salton Sea. Forecasts give an idea of the chances of having more earthquakes within a given time period in the affected area. usgs.gov/center-news/eaā€¦ The most likely scenario is that the earthquakes will continue and then die off.

ā€œSome moderately sized earthquakes may occur (M4.5-M5.4), which could cause localized damage. Smaller magnitude earthquakes (M3.0+) may be felt by people close to the epicenters.ā€

Why should I care?

I care because 90% of PhDs go to white people, and faculty of color account for only 3.8% of tenure track positions. I care because 20% of science graduate students were from URM populations, whereas only 12% of graduate students in the geosciences were from underrepresented groups.

Something happened last night that is very on brand for 2020.

We had a huge rainstorm come through at about 3 am and I realized the bedroom window was open. I got up to shut it but was struggling to open the blinds. Now, this set of blinds is broken. The string that opens them is super short and the mechanism that holds them up is broken. So I finally manage to raise them but then I had to hold the string in the teeth to keep them up so I could close the window.

Hi @GlenPhillips and @ToadWetSprocket! You asked me a question about #earthquakes in the PNW at one of your shows DC in Aug (thatā€™s me in the @500womensci shirt). Iā€™ve finally got a more complete response for you! (THREAD) The Pacific Northwest is a region of high #earthquake risk because of megathrust earthquakes on the plate boundary, deep earthquakes within the subducting plate, and shallow crustal earthquakes.

I spent a large part of last week reviewing applications for the @IRIS_EPO REU internership. I have some thoughts. (THREAD) First, the applicants are AMAZING. Iā€™m humbled, and glad that Iā€™m not on the job market! And our Ed Specialist has done a careful job constructing questions-this is important. REALLY important.

So here are my extended thoughts on the #KenyaCrack, or #KenyaGully if you prefer. The narrative thatā€™s going around is that this is a great gash that opened up and is splitting Africa in two. That's incorrect. Africa is being split but very slowly. This is called rifting. Riting is definitely happening in Africa. This is not really disputed. There is lots of scientific literature on the subject. sp.lyellcollection.org/content/420/1/ā€¦
But rifting occurs over a very long period of time, like millions and millions of years.
