On this Environment day let us know how our temples teach “importance of Environment” for thousands of years & is very part of our “Sanatana Dharma”

1) The temple established on the banks of river is called “Tirtha” Kshetra. Our Tirtha yatra is never complete without a dip and pray to the river. In Picture – Sri Rangam
2) The Rivers are worshipped in the form of goddesses like Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati, Narmada, Krishna Cauvery etc. It is even found in Rig Veda as “Nadi Stuti” because they were core of our civilization. In picture – Ganga, Teli ka Mnadir Gwalior.
3) The base of a temple pillars called “Kumbha” is representation of water. The final of the temple “Kalasa” is representation of water. In picture - Batesar Temple, Morena
4) The Daughter or Shiva Aranyani is worshipped as forest goddess married to Revanta, the son of Surya. In Picture – Sahasrabahu Temple, Gwalior
5) The Source of life everything on this earth – Surya is worshiped as god and all his elements like 7 colors in the form of 7 Horses, Wheels of his chariot for the revolution of Earth and rotation of Sun – In Picture – Surya, Sihoniya.
6) The Earth is worshipped in the form of Mother “Bhudevi”. She is rescued form the being drowned by the Varaha, the Vishnu Avatar. In Picture – Varaha Avatar, Aihole
7) The 4 important avatars of Vishnu – Matsya, Kurma, varaha, Narasimha are the manifestations of fauna on Earth. The Nandi Mandapa & Garuda Mandapa before Shiva & Vishnu Temples are very representation of what Sanatana Dharma is. In picture – Nandi – Warangal
8)Every God and Goddess has a Vahana. All the Vahanas are revered & worshipped. They are sculpted with great reverence on the temple walls. In picture – Garuda Vahana Vishnu, Belur
9)The worship of Vata Vriksha, Bilva Patra, Tulasi are colossal examples of how our “Pooja” is incomplete without the trees & herbs and the way we care for them. In Picture – Dakshina Murti, Kailasanathat Temple, Kanchipuram.
10)Our temples are filled with Water symbols, floral decorations, trees & Herbs, Herbivores, Carnivores, aquatic animals, Amphibians, reptiles and Birds.

Our temples provide a chance for us to worship every part of our nature and keeps reminding us always how important they are to our existence.
