This is exactly the "balancing" argument the international Right made from the start against lockdowns: yes, Covid-19 kills people, but so does a Depression, and therefore lockdowns & quarantines are immoral.

This view transformed from "morally reprehensible" to noble overnight:
I spoke this morning to @krystalball and @esaagar about this shift in Covid rhetoric, the authoritarianism and police state tactics evident since the protests began, and about the state of civil liberties generally in the US with the pandemic & protests:

I've been vocally supportive of the protests from the start and still am. But the radical, sudden, extreme shift in how our authorities talk and issue decrees about Covid-19 -- without any attempt to justify the 180 degree reversal -- is creepy and authoritarian:
AA & NA meetings are crucial to the lives of addicts. Banning them unquestionably carries the risk of killing people. How is it justified to still ban them when they are much smaller than the protests being encouraged & where distancing is far easier?
