What "shared human condition" means for me is that every one of you is my sister or brother and if I were born into your body or you into mine we'd face the same dilemmas and feel the same pain. Daring to put yourself in another's shoes is daring to get closer to your humanness.
"Stepping outside one's ego" means putting oneself in another's shoes and trying our level best to see things from their eyes and to feel what they feel. A lot of the time we don't want to do this because of what discomfort it entails - looking at our ourselves from the outside.
The "Golden Rule" appears in all spiritual traditions because it reflects the common spiritual truth that we are not separate, we share a human condition, and we can't hurt others emotionally without hurting ourselves spiritually.
The Qur'an says the every human being has a breath of the divine. Equality is the most sublime expression of divine love, and justice is the battle for equality. If you want to glorify the divine, love your sisters and brothers and commit your life to justice for everyone.
Some poor souls think that we battle for justice for the sake of power or "politics". It's true the some people are insincere, but normally these don't last for long. For us this is a spiritual path, and that's why it's worth so much more than our lives. We can never do enough.
