Israel vilified itself by shooting a 32 yr old autistic man in front of his caregiver. It's okay to feel the pang of shame at what's been done in one's name, God knows I did, as a Muslim and as an Arab and a Palestinian. I care about the victim more than I care about the killer.
Various "Arab nationalists" did horrible things in my name as an Arab and it shamed me deeply. I was not guilty, it was their actions and their sins, but it shamed me and I had to sit with it. Same for Islamic or Palestinian terrorists. It's okay to feel shame, it really is.
It's okay to feel shame without feeling the urge to project it at others, say that their feelings aren't valid, or say that they actually aren't feeling what they're feeling and are only pretending to, just to one-up you. Let's be better, please.
