It is said that the Ganga king of Odisha, Langula Narasimhadeva I, fought a four year war with the invaders' armies. He was known all around India, for his huge cavalry of elephants and was known as "Gajapati", the king of elephants.

Narasimhadeva always rode on his favourite elephant called Sudehi. Once during the battle he was injured by an arrow & fainted on the war field. Sudehi immidiately came to his master's rescue. She lifted him in her trunk and carried the fainted king to the royal doctor!
The king was saved. In the next battle he rode on Sudehi & defeated other invading armies too. Hence he was bestowed by the title of "Hamira Mana Mardana".
Such was the love of Narasimhadeva for Sudehi dat he sculpted the famous event in stone before building the Konark temple!
