As a lawyer I simply cannot support any criminal damage or lawlessness. Not whilst we live in a semblance of democracy. That makes Dominic Cummings failure to resign so harmful to our society. That makes it difficult to support serious penalties for those who tore down the statue
Of course the slaver statue should have been removed lawfully but HMG has done terrible damage to the rule of law & respect for it in supporting Cummings lawlessness and double standards. (& yes he DID break the law despite no action taken by police) threadreaderapp.com/thread/1266496… and -
failure to act over Cummings by Johnson & cabinet even to the point of the AG @SuellaBraverman wrongly suggesting he had done nothing wrong, undermined the rule of law & our safety to point where those prosecuted for toppling the statue might feel aggrieved at double standards.
The enormity of this Government’s failure to deal with Cummings has already done damage to the integrity of our lockdown but may yet do further damage in future to our belief in impartiality of law and to its equal application to all strata’s of society. That is how serious it is
