Today US embassy Islamabad put out a statement on Khalilzad's trip on Afghan peace. Notable: 1) For the third time, Khalilzad met only Bajwa, not Khan, Qureshi 2) "expressed his appreciation...for the [role of] General Bajwa [for] peace in Afghanistan" pk.usembassy.gov/pr-6820/
In my counting, Khalilzad has been to Pak at least 13 times since Sept 2018. US embassy has put out 9 statements of his visits; across all releases, US embassy mentions his meetings with Bajwa. Per ISPR, it was his 10th meeting with Bajwa.
Interesting that the two sides haven't put out statements after all meetings. Of 10 statements put out by ISPR, US embassy didn't say anything after 4. And of 9 reported by US embassy, ISPR didn't report 3. I imagine this has something to do with what happens during the meeting.
For historians of Afghanistan and US-Pak relations, the contents of these 13 meetings will be important to understand the war in Afghanistan, its current and future status. It would be great if we don't have to wait for the archives to know.
Final bit of inside baseball: While many criticize Khalilzad's change of heart on Pak after advocating designation as "state sponsor of terror" till 2016, what about NSC director Curtis? She was proposing a different policy until 2017 than what the admin came to implement.
In my opinion, journalists haven't really dug into Khalilzad-Bajwa pact, & Pak calculus on US asks. Recent piece by Mazetti et al was interesting (nytimes.com/2020/03/05/wor…) but sources no one on Khalilzad team/someone with meaningful knowledge of the process since Sept 18.
Aside but the one relatively recent deep-dive with info and interesting analytic angles on US-Pak was this by @nickschmidle: newyorker.com/news/news-desk…
