Every Pandemic has elements of unknowns. D challenge with Covid is some folks have tried to say with certainty what was yet an unknown. So science is now beginning to get a bad name as WHO shifts some of its earlier positions. The caveats that has been missing is problematic.
The 1918 Pandemic Virus was not fully discovered until 1933. So scientists were dealing with lots of unknowns during the pandemic in 1918-1920. What is happening now is Scientists have not been transparent enough to put caveats around guidance & honestly say they were not sure.
I think the problem or mistake that was made from the start is WHO and scientists made it look as though they knew enough about Covid to inform specific policies when in fact there were lots of Unknown unknowns. And their actions were out of caution which is understandable.
For instance; WHO said in March that face covering Does Not work and not necessary. But last week; they changed their mind that it is now advisable to wear face covering where you cannot socially distance. Science seem to be following the news and not leading it.
I am not blaming WHO fully here. I am just saying Govts have to decide, Science is only a guide. But credibility of science will depend on how it is presented. "Lets do this out of caution" is better than saying "Science says we must do this". The Tone matters. As we proceed....
...Many of us will be wiser only with Hindsight. Personally; what the revisions from WHO says to me is DON'T PANIC, BUT KEEP TAKING COMMON SENSE PRECAUTIONS. There is nothing to fear. No to hysteria. Those shouting Apocalypse may have gone too far. Be safe but be calm.
I am not a scientist. But as a Strategist; I believe the management of Covid by the scientist community could have been much better. Advice and common assumptions have been presented as Scientific Facts. Caveats have not been used enough. But we all live and learn
What Nigeria & other nations should have done better is Have robust Home grown scientists to advise them. Rather most nations depend on CNN & WHO to plan and make policies. We need our own domestic cohort of experts who will reflect our peculiarities & act in "National Interest"

SOME PROVISIONS FROM THE NEW POLICE ACT THAT NIGERIANS SHOULD BE AWARE OF.
The Nigeria Police Force (Establishment) Act 2020 was signed into law by President Buhari in September 2020 as a replacement for the antiquated 1943 Legislation we have been using since Independence.
While the Act contain many provisions that relates to the operations of the Police; there are a few interesting clauses in the Act that should be of special interest to Nigerians. This Thread simply highlights very few of the many provisions.
1.THE IGP MUST MAKE PROVISION FOR THE MENTAL & PSYCHOLOGICAL WELLBEING OF OFFICERS. Mental health is a big problem in Nigeria as a whole; but Section 9(e) of the Act makes it mandatory for the IGP to make sure the mental & psychological needs of police officers are catered for.
Different countries have employed different ways to combat this pandemic with successes despite variation in tools employed. Nigeria cannot afford to just copy other countries. A distinctive local solution must be found.
Our security agencies cannot police the chaos that a prolonged national total lockdown will create. We already see signs of that in Lagos. Hunger & destitution can also kill more people than the virus itself.
So what are some of the ways other nations have managed this pandemic.
Examples are:
SOUTH KOREA - No Lockdown but aggressive tracing, testing and wide use of face masks. Virus now coming under control and impact on economy minimised.
JAPAN - Partial lockdown in Evenings and Weekends only. Virus death very low and infections coming down.
EFCC HAS NO POWER TO UNILATERALLY FREEZE ANY ACCOUNT IN NIGERIA
A small revolution took place last month in a Lagos court that many may not have noticed. It is normal practice for security agencies in Nigeria to act beyond their powers as experienced by folks on a daily basis.
Reports of bank accounts being frozen by the EFCC is a regular occurrence all over Nigeria. But a court has now reaffirmed the position of the law on this practice. The conclusion of the court was that EFCC HAS NO POWER TO ORDER A BANK ACCOUNT TO BE FROZEN.
THEY MUST OBTAIN A COURT ORDER TO DO SO. Without a court order, any bank that act based on EFCC request is acting unlawfully and will be held legally liable.
