I have an easy test for understanding the quality of economic analysis. Go back in time and read what the person had to say 5, 10 years ago. Of course, he/she will have made mistakes, that is not the point.

I was looking for an old @FT op-ed by @martinwolf_ on Germany and EMU imbalances.
With a Google search I bumped on a number of insightful pieces on austerity, rebalancing, monetary policy, etc

Thes are pieces written 10 years ago; but besides factual mistakes they contained all the keys for reading the EMU crisis. And amazing lucidity.
Most of that, today is consensual, but at the time it went against the fiscal profligacy story that dominated in BXL, Frankfurt, etc

Now I understand why I read Martin every week, and I enjoy it even when I do not agree with him.
