IMPORTANT THREAD BY ME
To my white friends:
Can we sit for 8 min 46 seconds. Can we sit quietly as the clock counts down, as it shows quotes at specific times during those LONG 8 min and 46 seconds that this POS kept his knee on the neck of #GeorgeFloyd?
8m46s.com
To my white friends I ask, does this make you uncomfortable, does it cause you to fidget, look away or mumble under your breath, that same breath that was stolen from George Floyd, some kind of systemic, institutionalized, conscious or unconscious bias not only about the
discomfort of this post but maybe also at me for daring to speak/post about this?
Can we sit in the discomfort and imagine what kind of hatred it has to take for any human to take another human's life let alone kneel on a man's neck for 8 min and 46 seconds while he pled
for his life and for breath, the very breath we all take for granted?
Can we sit through the discomfort, the anxiety and our heart beating heavily, (as mine did) as we know the end that's coming, the same end George knew was coming?
To my white friends did you make it to the end of this post or did you scroll by because it was too hard to hear these questions or watch this countdown?
Did anyone feel a knee jerk reaction to 'defend' or make an excuse that would only further the racial divide or
did your heartbreak realizing that THIS has been going on for centuries and maybe only now it's hit us?
These are important questions and none asked in judgment, it just is.
Can we sit and realize that George Floyd's murder is another in our face, a reality of what's been going
on forever and NEEDS to change?
To be honest, for me to post this on my wall, almost knowing I will get push back and maybe even lose some friends is difficult however it needs to be said and while I'm probably making a mess out of it, however that's how we grow and learn,
we make a mess out of things however we keep trying.
I'm dedicated to continuing to try, to learn, to stand up, use my voice and try my damndest to be the ally my black brothers and sisters need and deserve!
One thing I know for sure is that if we/I ever want to be part of
positive change, we/I need to face the reality of the inequality, the systemic institutionalized racism that exists and denying ANY of it is contributing to the problem NOT the solution.
WE/I must NOT be silent, it's up to us to educate each other, to call out what we know is
and to strive to do better...
We/I owe it to all we know and the so many we don't, whose lives are and always have clearly been different than ours, because of the color of one's skin.
Please, we have an opportunity to make a pivotal change, however for our very young country
to truly grow and change, we first MUST acknowledge what we, as a country, have done and continue to do.
The only way to heal is to acknowledge the hurt and disparities that we as a country have done and continueto do, only then can we actually heal... as my teacher says,
so eloquently "people who are committed to social change must understand that to dismantle the systems that create oppression, you've got to dismantle the systems that exist within yourself."
