Today hurts.

Four years ago, we woke to a deep loss that scarred our communities. The moment was one of many reminders of the hate that is all too present for the LGBTQ+ community, and especially for our BIPOC trans siblings. (1)
Today, as we remember and honor the lives lost on June 12th, 2016 during the Pulse Nightclub shooting, we recognize the pain that continues to haunt the LGBTQ+ community. (2)
This past week, through more senseless acts of violence, we have lost the lives of Dominique "Rem’mie" Fells and Riah Milton, two Black trans women. We mourn for our Black trans siblings, who are disproportionately affected by hate-motivated violence. (3)
As we continue to share resources and placed to donate to support the Black Lives Matter movement and Black queer communities, we also want to share places to donate to support the family and friends of Dominique "Rem’mie" Fells and Riah Milton. (4)
You can find the verified GoFundMe pages for both Dominique and Riah here: linktr.ee/MSPAnational (5)
As medical students, we also want to condemn the further attacks on our communities.Today the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) moved to roll back LGBTQ+ health protections, announcing it was “restoring the rule of law” (6)
by interpreting sex discrimination “according to the plain meaning of the word ‘sex’ as male or female and as determined by biology.” Trans communities already face systemic barriers to care, and discrimination from healthcare providers. (7)
This announcement by HHS will only make it more challenging for trans individuals to receive appropriate care within the healthcare system; moreover, this change stands in complete contradiction to science on sex, gender identity, and gender expression. (8)
To our fellow LGBTQ+ community members:
We see you, we are you.

We will continue to do the work to support and advocate for all our community members. (9)
We call on all medical students and healthcare providers to reject this kind of discrimination, and provide trans patients with equitable, comprehensive health care.

We end this by reminding you that:
#BlackLivesMatter
#TransLivesMatter
#BlackTransLivesMatter (10)
