I cycled 8.41 miles in search of an ice cream and earned 70 BetterPoints with @BetterPoints betterpoints.uk@ericonabike⁩ ⁦@RideLeicester⁩ ⁦@bricycle⁩ ⁦@gavcarter90⁩ ⁦@OweniteAdam
A fine warm evening as I headed out in search of #wands on the protected #popupbikelanes - I rode the whole way on new or existing cycle lanes, some very old, others not quite finished, I didn’t find an ice cream but I saw a lot of #cones
Once in town, I headed for Granby Street and the contraflow #cyclelane where historically (Feb2020) there was always a vehicle blocking it - but the #wands are in, parking bays suspended for physical distancing and continental cafe culture, and a clear route to the train station
Up the A6 London Road to Victoria Park and I nearly caught one of the few #Deliveroo riders who actually used the protected cycle lane, the others still on the pavement or road.
Used the crossing to get onto Victoria Park and joined others cycling and walking in the evening sunshine the new dedicated cycle path, separates people who walk or run from people who ride reducing altercations - and then down Peace Walk to Lancaster Road
There’s a new permanent 2-way cycle lane down Lancaster Road to the junction with Tigers Way & work restarted to complete it by end of June after COVID19 stopped work in February. Vehicles can’t turn right from De Montfort Street to get to Tigers Way. Here be silver #wands
There’s resurfacing and a new cycle crossing going in - not sure about the road markings - I may be wrong about which way motorists can use Lancaster Road
Across Tigers Way to the prison and a new cycle path on the edge of #NelsonMandela Park. As it passes through a wooded area it was littered with twigs and leaves. I’ve included some @WorldBollard too
Turned left to use the first key workers #popupcyclelane in UK in search of wands. The construction hoardings around yet another car park mean this is a blind bend on a narrow pavement.
On to Aylestone Road and the repurposed bus lane with Hippos or Rhinos and some words of encouragement #NoGoingBack - shout out to the two motorists who didn’t jump ahead of me at the refuges after the hippos end.
Aylestone Road protection ends at the junction for the new housing, and the yellow ramps can be tricky in the wet, they’re about a metre wide with a lip and thus if you have two as here or more you still are aiming for quite a narrow window. I turned back at @fmbcycles
Another time I’m taking pics of the development of cycle markings - there are some quite prehistoric ones around #NoGoingBack #getpedalling #SpacesToBreathe
As you come off the Aylestone road pop up you join one of the older bits of dedicated infra and meet the #bollards - I assume they were put in to show a two way route and prevent vehicles parking but wonder if they could be redeployed and replaced with thinner #wands now?
Up past the prison towards the Newarke and found this traffic sign which could be on the road - and then through @dmuleicester to the River Soar and more wands across the bridge and onto the Boulevard
On the Boulevard the wands are clearly designed to show motor traffic can no longer turn left towards the university as they stop shortly before the refuge.
Unfortunately @tesco juggernauts often parked up on opposite side of road on the double yellows blocking traffic and creating a risk approaching the refuge ahead
So a little bit of road cycling brings us to the #miniHolland that is #BraunstoneGate. Boulevard traffic can no longer turn left into Braunstone Gate, most of the parking bays are suspended and cafe/bar culture may spread out on to the narrow pavements as a result
The road surface however ...
Oh and if you thought @Leicester_News was running out of #cones think again @gavcarter90 has a stash #nogoingback #SpacesToBreathe #getpedalling
