Arthur Ago: There are four main points that Trump's exec order
~Encouraging certifying police service (doesn't establish anything new)
~Establish Dept of Justice database to track cops w/ complaints filed against them (however, reporting isn't required)

Arthur Ago: (con't)
~Provides money for data collection
~Mandates database incl person who was stopped & their age/race/disability/etc., which goes beyond decertification of police officers.

Arthur Ago: We need to encourage the hiring & retention of police officers who treat people fairly, without regard for race, etc.

Arthur Ago: The whole world is watching what's happening in our country right now. They're watching what this President is doing, & the optics of his exec order today were terrible. I don't think there was a single family of a police mistreatment victim present.
@AgoArthur
Arthur Ago: 90% of the calls in San Francisco come in for non-traditional police activity, such as drug addiction or mental health issues. There should be mental health professionals, for ex., to respond to these calls, possibly with police.
@AgoArthur @LawyersComm
Arthur Ago: Social workers should be on the front line as first responders. The police should step in only when necessary.

Arthur Ago: The worst thing about the situation of the police shooting a man who'd fallen asleep in a drive-thru line was that nothing that night indicated the need for deadly force.
@AgoArthur @LawyersComm
Arthur Ago: The man used the police's stun gun & discharged it but missed. He was left with what was essentially a yellow toy gun; he had no way of recharging it. It did not require the police to use deadly force.
@AgoArthur @LawyersComm
Arthur Ago: Police jail DUI offenders to prevent them from getting in the car & driving again while under the influence, which is why offenders are arrested & jailed. The police could also boot the car & drive the person home & give them a court date.
@AgoArthur @LawyersComm
Arthur Ago: If this President was worried about what came before & was it effective, he could have used the Justice in Policing Act of 2020.
@AgoArthur @LawyersComm
Arthur Ago: To effect change, start with hiring, then training, training on levels of force, then funding. It's a serious issue that can't be done off the cuff with an exec order.
@AgoArthur @LawyersComm
Arthur Ago: Trump's exec order basically addresses issues already in place; the order doesn't even qualify as window dressing.
@AgoArthur @LawyersComm
Arthur Ago: Vote. Push candidates on very specific issues--make them educate themselves.
