The New Mexico Public Education Department celebrates the U.S. Supreme Court ruling preserving the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. A thread... 1/
It allows current #DACA recipients in NM and across the country to continue to pursue their dreams & goals. This ruling will provide relief to many in our community who have awaited the decision with anxiety & fear. 2/
Secretary Stewart commented, “DACA recipients in New Mexico are our neighbors, co-workers, military service members, & integral members of our community... 3/
“The Supreme Court’s action today ensures that individuals brought here as children and who broke no immigration laws are shielded from deportation and instead allowed to continue contributing positively to our state.” #HereToStay 4/
DACA has been an enormously popular program. According to the American Immigration Council, about 5,800 active DACA recipients live in New Mexico. Since 2012, about 21,375 people have been granted DACA status in our state. 5/
Today’s decision was very good news, but much remains to be done to provide long-term solutions for DACA recipients. The ruling was based on the process used to terminate the DACA program and not about the merits of the program itself. 6/
The NMPED will continue to support it’s DACA students and colleagues. #HomeIsHere 7/7
