Some more interesting insights from #CleverLands by @lucy_crehan
about countries #UsingEducation to progress #FINLAND @liandersson
To appreciate how much this nation values education as a society, think about this - even 400 years back, you could not marry if you could not read!
Interestingly, there are no school inspections or teacher evaluations to hold teachers to account. Around 3 decades back, the govt officially decided to disband the posts of school inspectors. Finns believe in their teachers!
Teaching is a highly valued profession in Finland. Getting into a teacher training course is as difficult as some of the most competitive entrance tests in India like JEE, NEET or even UPSC exams!
Society has an equal say in school functioning. Each school has a (legally empowered) Child Welfare Committee of experts from society which meets every child twice a year to understand the gaps in learning & personality to advise the authorities.
Perhaps the real secret of Finland’s education model is that they have cracked the code of early childhood education, evidenced by thinkers like @pasi_sahlberg They use this age to prepare a child to get ready to learn…
…and then start formal schooling from the age of 7. In early childhood, their mantra is ‘playing is working’ for a child. Many countries including India are wasting that golden age which is foundational for learning.
Last but not least, Finns worked hard & had long discussions to bring their education to this stage. Their biggest reform started by the Edn Bill of 1963 took 16 yrs to finalize and another 16 yrs to implement officially!
