Jharkhand CM @HemantSorenJMM had requested a moratorium on the auction of coal blocks, but the PM Modi still announced it. Jharkhand has approached the apex court. Now even Chhattisgarh & Maharashtra have raised objections. My report in @GaonConnectionE bit.ly/2YlzpTr
On June 20, Chhattisgarh envt minister wrote to @PrakashJavdekar @moefcc informing the proposed 1,995 sq km in Hasdeo Aranya as Lemru elephant reserve. Destruction of forests due to #coal mining would increase human-elephant. Remove 5 coal blocks from auction @ChhattisgarhCMO
Maharashtra envt minister @AUThackeray has also written to @PrakashJavdekar @moefcc opposing the proposed coal block auction by the Centre, as the mine site is located near Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Chandrapur district of the state. (Pic for representation purpose only)
In its petition before the Supreme Court, Jharkhand govt stressed on the “need for fair assessment of the social and environmental impact on the huge tribal population and vast tracks of forest lands of the State and its residents which are likely to be adversely affected” #coal
“The decision by the @CoalMinistry & @PMOIndia to go ahead with commercial mining and coal block auctions without acknowledging our concerns around ... the impact on our forests and tribal population is blatant disregard of co-operative federalism,” @HemantSorenJMM @JharkhandCMO
“The most worrying part about the recent move of the Centre is that some of these #coal blocks were classified as ‘no-go’ areas mutually by the coal and the environment ministry because of their very high ecological value,” @Bh_Chandra #CoalMining
On June 15, three days before the PM Modi announced auction of 41 #coal blocks for commercial mining, nine representatives of gram panchayats from Hasdeo forest area in Chhattisgarh wrote to the PM requesting no coal mining in their area. But, the auction announcement was made.
“Hasdeo area has thick forests and is a catchment area for rivers. The Central government has no concern for the environment, or the rights of the tribal communities, which are protected by the Constitution,” @alokshuklacg of Chhattisgarh Bachao Andolan. #coal #CoalMining
