Okay tweeple. There is a party going on at a club near my house with loud music and there is no way I can sleep before midnight. So, here is a thread on some key stories I did in 2019 from various parts of the country. Slow, travel, explore, learn & report - my 2019 in four words
I started the year by writing in Deccan Herald (Jan 12, 2019) about the extreme weather forecast for 2019. As the year draws toward an end, the forecast has come true. Will prove that at the end of this thread.
So far, I had only focused only on the southwest #monsoon. This year, I learnt a bit about the northeast monsoon and reported on it, especially warning of the impacts of a deficient NE monsoon 2018 on southern India and drought scenario. (Jan 30, 2019)

Right at the beginning of 2019, we were in a drought. Thanks to @zenrainman, I met the Bhovi well-diggers community of Bengaluru and reported on how their livelihood and our water security is inter-twined. (March 1, 2019)

@zenrainman Till last year, I focused more on the farming community in the country. This year, I made an effort to interact with the fishing community and report on them. @earthjournalism @third_pole helped explore fishers' issues.

@zenrainman @earthjournalism @third_pole @zenrainman always adds a fresh solution-oriented perspective to issues related to water & wastewater. He helped me understand the so-called 'controversial' project of reusing treated wastewater of Bengaluru for recharging tanks & farming. (April 22 2019)

@zenrainman @earthjournalism @third_pole A story that initially made me numb as I landed in Puri, Odisha a week after it was hit by Cyclone Fani. I was shocked and shaken by the extent of devastation Nature can cause. And, amazed by the resilience of the poor, who face the brunt. (May 24, 2019)

@zenrainman @earthjournalism @third_pole This year, I travelled to 5-6 districts of Jharkhand to report on various issues. Spent some days in tribal-dominated Santhal Pargana. The state was reeling under an acute drought and there were barely any reports on it (June 4, 2019)

@zenrainman @earthjournalism @third_pole This year I met inspiring people in the field who made a lasting impression on me. One of them was PadamShri Simon Oraon, whom I interviewed at his village near Ranchi, Jharkhand. A great man with down to earth living and powerful thinking (April 20, 2019) gaonconnection.com/electionnewsan…
@zenrainman @earthjournalism @third_pole What a woman! The Iron Woman of Jharkhand -- Dayamani Barla. A fearless tribal activist, who I interviewed at her tea shop in Ranchi. (April 25, 2019)

@zenrainman @earthjournalism @third_pole A story in which I put my heart as I visited anganwadis in 4-5 districts of Karnataka to report on hot-meals programme Mathrupoorna for pregnant & lactating mothers. This story brought me so much joy as I watched little kids eat meals & eggs(June 10, 2019) indiaspend.com/how-karnataka-…
@zenrainman @earthjournalism @third_pole There are some stories you keep doing for years, hoping some change will come and it never comes. Reporting on Bihar floods is one such story. Embanked rivers, breaching embankments and mayhem. (July 16, 2019)

@zenrainman @earthjournalism @third_pole A story that made me feel sh*t about our privileged lives -- illegal mica mining in Jharkhand. It was a horror to watch young tribals descend into dangerous rathole mines to scrap mica. gaonconnection.com/swayamproject/… This story wouldn't have been possible without my buddy @Watervagabond
@zenrainman @earthjournalism @third_pole @Watervagabond A story that made me cry. Literally. Meeting fisherwomen in Kanyakumari and Thiruvanthapuram districts who lost their husbands and sons to Cyclone Ockhi in 2017. The dead bodies were never found. They still await them to return home (Sept 16, 2019)

@zenrainman @earthjournalism @third_pole @Watervagabond I do not want to bid adieu to 2019 without thanking Dr Rajeevan @rajeevan61 for guiding me & helping me understand the science behind many stories reported by me. It was inspiring to meet women scientists at NIOT to report on how science is helping fishers gaonconnection.com/swayamproject/…
@zenrainman @earthjournalism @third_pole @Watervagabond @rajeevan61 This year I made an effort to focus on women & get their voices in my stories. While reporting on climate change & sea-level rise in Sundarbans, I focused on women who are left behind when their husbands and sons migrate as they lose land to the rising sea

@zenrainman @earthjournalism @third_pole @Watervagabond @rajeevan61 Another story for which I need to thank @Watervagabond who took me to Paharia tribe village in Jharkhand. A particularly vulnerable tribal group whose children are facing malnutrition. The tribe has been disassociated from its forests. Its women trafficked gaonconnection.com/read/paharia-t…
@zenrainman @earthjournalism @third_pole @Watervagabond @rajeevan61 An important data story on how Jharkhand has thousands of crore of mining fund, which remains unutilised, as its tribal population suffers. Rich lands, poor people. A shame on our 'development model' (Nov 25, 2019).

gaonconnection.com/read/jharkhand… Thanks @sresthab with all the data
@zenrainman @earthjournalism @third_pole @Watervagabond @rajeevan61 @sresthab And, as they say life comes full circle, this 2019 thread has also come full circle :-) My 2019 year end piece taking stock of extreme weather events in 2019, about which I had 'hinted' in my piece at the beginning of the year (no. 1 story in this thread)

gaonconnection.com/swayamproject/…
@zenrainman @earthjournalism @third_pole @Watervagabond @rajeevan61 @sresthab Thread ends. But, the club is still playing loud music -- aaj blue hai pain-paani-paani-paani.

2020, please come soon :-)

Friends, leave the baggage behind.
Life is short and unpredictable.
Our paths may never cross. Leave behind happy memories.
Forgive. Love. Smile.
