Team Trump is clearly (and rightly) terrified about losing WI—because, as their campaign said, “if we lose Wisconsin, we lose the election.”

Today, Pence and Betsy DeVos travel to Waukesha for a school choice roundtable.

DeVos is the single most unpopular person in Trump’s cabinet. School choice makes voters see red.

Betsy DeVos is Trump world’s emissary to Wisconsin in the midst of #Pride month, which makes a certain kind of evil Trumpian sense, because DeVos has rolled back protections for trans students and ended investigations of anti-trans discrimination.

And, of course, DeVos has been an abject disaster for education across the board—proposing budget cuts, backing privatization, expanding vouchers, undermining equity, abandoning sexual assault survivors, and supporting for-profit predation.

Last time DeVos visited Wisconsin, she was greeted by protesters (me included!) as she visited a voucher school that, as activists pointed out, “teaches women are inferior to men, homosexuality is a sin, and that the earth is 6,000 years old.”

I guess they saw that as a win?
After lifting up Betsy DeVos—whose mix of malevolence and incompetence has earned her a 28% approval rating—as the icon of Trump’s disastrous education policy, Pence’s next event includes Scott Walker, whom our state roundly rejected in 2018.

Instead, he’s touring a shipyard in Marinette and then holding a Fox News town hall with Sean Hannity in Green Bay, at an airport.

So, if things aren’t going well, he can escape by boat or plane.

Wisconsin is no stranger to justice deferred. In 1849, a majority of Wisconsin voters supported a referendum for Black male suffrage—but an even larger number of voters abstained, and the state Board of Canvassers wrongfully decided that the abstentions counted as "no" votes.
For 17 subsequent years, as Professor Christy @ClarkPujara has documented, Black Wisconsinites were denied the ballot. Debate raged, and white voters rejected extending suffrage in two more referenda. But in 1866, a court case changed our state's history. madison365.com/untold-storyof…

One year ago today, Democratic Party of Wisconsin members elected me to a two-year term as chair. Today, thanks to the labor of thousands, our party is stronger than ever—and our country is engulfed w lethal crises, from COVID to the chronic crisis of racism. We have work to do.
I’m grateful to all those who put their trust in me in a time and place where the stakes are impossibly high. My response is to put my trust in you. We have to win—and to organize for long-term change at the same time. Fight. Include. Respect. Empower.
Political parties can’t do everything, but they can do some things. Especially when they understand that they’re a part of broader social movement ecosystem—many people with many strategies and tactics, working for change.
