These 1600 yrs old two “Gavaksha/Jaalaka” (Windows) are from Durga Temple, Aihole is prime example of how our temples are Encyclopaedia – Store houses of Knowledge.

1)First Gavaksha/Jaalaka – Represents a “Dina” (Day). There are 8 Spokes representing the 8 “Prahara(s)” of a Dina. Each Prahara is made of 3 “Ganta(s)” (Hours). Day is of 4 Praharas & Night is of 4 Praharas.
Wonder fact here is Music strictly goes with 8 Praharas. Certain Raagas will be sung only during specific Praharas.
2)Second Gavaksha/Jaalaka – outer 12 spokes represent 12 “Maasa” & 12 “Raashi”. Inner 6 spokes represent 6 “Ruthu(s)”.
Sad fact is present kids neither know what Chaitra Vaishakam & Mesha Vrishabham are nor they are familiar with Vasantha Greeshmam.
