This statement by Helen is ahistorical + sadly reflects a simple one dimensional thinking for an issue that requires critical and complexity thinking. Let me explain:
During the cold war, the global game plan was controlled from Washington London and Paris.
The evil apartheid state was tolerated as a necessary geopolitical cog in this game. It thrived despite universal sanctions. But after the fall of the Soviet Union the game masters led by London decided the pretence must end. They again decided the game
plan for SA under the new global neo-liberal paradigm that was being pushed under globalization. P W Botha failed to read the script and succumbed to illness and was forced off the scene. When de Klerk took over, he understood and accepted the inevitable.
He was thus just a pawn in the bigger game to protect the interests of the western neo-liberal powers led by London in the case of SA. Apartheid had to end and negotiations had to begin, he was told by Thatcher. de Klerk had no option but he was smart enough
to understand that he must protect the interests of the Afrikaner and achieve a stable transition for business. He did not alone decide the game. He was forced to understand how to play the game. For this he was rewarded with a Nobel prize in 1993. 🤔

I share the following truths about organisational dynamics. On my mind is the visit by Thabo Mbeki to FS to help unite the ANC. It will not succeed. He said the ANC is too big to fail. This is misleading.
Let me share some conceptual principles.
Organisations succeed because they are managed by highly experienced leaders who are aligned behind a common Purpose and Vision. They also succeed because they use a shared operating model and subscribe to common values.
The ANC has failed to be repositioned in line with a new Purpose and Objectives to meet the needs of all SAns.
Instead their purpose is to loot the state coffers in a massive way. Such an entity must be collapsed and be rebuilt. google.com/amp/s/thoughtl…
Lawlessness is the biggest and most dangerous challenge to our young democracy. Many examples abound. But the worst and most scarry is that planners and leaders of the July attempted coup, with epicentre in KZN, are known but free to enjoy freedom with us.
None of the key offices in the criminal justice system can deny this fact. The President also knows them.
Investors now say that SA lacks credible leadership because of collapsed governance at the executive and oversight levels @CyrilRamaphosa cannot deny this
Just mention one country, just one, where planners and leaders of an attempted coup are allowed to continue enjoying their rights under a democracy that they intended to supplant and replace with authoritarianism a ala KZN.!!
Mr President, where are you??
We chose a democratic form of governance because we cherished the idea of accountability and law and order. The obverse is anarchy.
The paradox is that the party with mandate to govern has adopted a culture that promotes anarchy.
1st, the ANC believes it is superior to our Constitution. They have successfully embedded a culture of Prebendalism at all levels.
Accountability is not part of their vocabulary. It restrains them.
The ANC is now a party of factions.
The factional problems of the party are now contested at a national platform. The legitimacy and authority of the state are being tested. Followers of Zuma are openly threatening chaos to defend him. The agitators of the July uprising are yet to be arrested.
A feature of a failed state is when: 1) illegality occurs with impunity - the planners of the July insurrection are known but still walk free. 2) political killings are common but prosecution are rare 3) well known thieves are proud members of cabinet
4) economic sabotage occurs but arrests are fail to happen 5) almost 50% of the workforce is unemployed 6) the economy has been battered by the pandemic and the President openly states that his primary purpose is to unite the governing party!!
7) heavy train steel rails are routinely stolen and sold to well known scrap dealers who report them to China 8) people were promised a better life for all but ended with the worst life for all
God help us all.
Eskom and de Ruyter have dominated the media precisely because the impact of the Eskom failure to power the economy is pervasive. But the vitriol against Eskom ignores the destructive role of political interference in its operations and strategic choices.
Former President Mbeki did accept, and apologise, that govmnt ignored professional advise to invest in more power generation. The operational difficulties to keep old power units running have their genesis in the Mbeki administration.
Failure to adopt a turnkey approach to Kusile and Medupi was a profound technical blunder. They are still not ready to deliver as expected!!!
Political interferences in operational and commercial decisions have derailed our SOEs. (SAA; PRASA; DENEL etc
Some prominent ANC leaders like @zsaul1 support @CyrilRamaphosa that the ANC can be rehabilitated and abandon its embedded culture of patronage that has now morphed into prebendalism.
Change in such a substantial scale is historically unprecedented.
ANC is not a manufacturing entity whose business model is driven by tech driven processes. As a party it relies on alignment of purpose and culture to achieve its political objectives. Organisational dynamics demonstrate that the challenge these leaders face
requires leadership overhaul that is impossible especially given the economic condition of the country. ANC is seen as a provider of employment. Period. KZN attests to this view. Replacing council members is a life threatening action. People have been killed
