My virus truther man has switched from showing this Houston-area dashboard, which used to be "lol green there is no rise in hospitalizations QED" to a new one that shows the entire state. I point this out not just to dunk, but b/c this illustrates a durable aspect of the pandemic
Specifically, it's what I was calling the "split-screen effect" in this post. Contagions (social & viral) don't have uniform spread. They cluster, & this clustering means you can cherry pick real easily & tell whatever story you want.
If you want to tell a story of hospital overwhelm, you can find some hospitals that are running out of beds. If you want to tell a story of "everything's fine," you can find many more hospitals with excess capacity if you just widen the search criteria a little bit.
Take NYC. When NYC was surging, they were most of the "case count" for the US. Really those US-wide case count numbers were pretty meaningless, since what we had was an NYC outbreak, mostly. Same in China, same in Italy, same in Iran when this started.
Some geographies are rising while others are flat or falling. This just how it is. The fact that you can point to places where hasn't hit yet, or can gerrymander an ICU map that shows capacity, just means it's a totally normal contagion we're having.
This will continue to be the case for as long as it goes on, which means we'll continue to have this split-screen view of the outbreak. If you're in an area where nothing's happening, & you follow reports from people who want to talk about all the ICU beds that are free there...
...then you're going to wonder what the deal is. And you'll wonder it right up until your area becomes a cluster & people you actually know start dropping, or go into their second month of serious illness, or have a "recovery" where they're still messed up months later.
