I'm... really bothered by the Myke Cole apology post (the one from 2018) in a way that's heightening my discomfort with his wording in his current thread, and I'm still piecing together exactly why that is.

But I'm uncomfortable with how much it's being held up as a model.
I think part of my discomfort is encapsulated in this comment on it, which, nothing against the commenter. I'm glad someone who knows him was there to point this out, since he needed things pointed out.
I've had a couple of threads today on the theme of How People Learn Better, which I think is important, but it's discomfiting how sanguine he and so many other people seem to be with the idea that he just operated for so long without any idea that this stuff was wrong.
I'm not clear, reading his apology, if he understood then or understands now that there's no such thing as "aggressively hitting on" in a way that is safe and respectful. It's possible he thinks he just missed the mark, misjudged a cue, etc.
Apart from the one concrete step of resigning a position at a bar meet-up in that post, mostly he seems to be talking in terms of moderating his behavior. Cutting back on things. I've already registered my opinion on things like bar and con attendance...
...but I wonder if "aggressively hitting on" people while "projecting an uncomfortable amount of intensity" is something he's tried to moderate, or something he has recognized is a problem in the entire?
He has painted a picture that he understands he did wrong.

I am not seeing that he knows what he did wrong, outside of the special case of people telling him.
I don't know. This is sure going to hand ammunition to the people who say "It's no good to even start apologizing because that just makes Them smell weakness and then it will never be enough."

But, you know what I say about trying to withhold ammo from a munitions factory.
I just... I think we could do with hearing less how absolutely humiliated he is, what a kick in the teeth it is, how just low down it makes him feel, and a clearer demonstration of the lines he's drawing for himself.

If we're talking about accountability.
