Basically I want to see if these mammalian “standards” apply across and DOWN the tree of life!
Do the bones of fish, frogs, reptiles, and birbos do the same things as mammals? If so, when did these features evolve? TO THE FOSSILS!

I’ve been looking at some of the earliest skeletonizing vertebrates and it may surprise you to know that bone 🦴 and dentine🦷 both often played interchangeable roles in early skeletons!
That’s RIGHT our teeth tissues and our bones tissueslikely share a very intertwined history!

Ah there you gar! A great example of tooth-y tissues that are NOT in the mouth is found in fish like this fossil Gar.

In fact some early fish healed their bones with dentine! Tooth stuff to heal bones with!?
