In response to another deadly shooting tied to #CHOP, Seattle City Council members @cmkshama and @CMLGonzalez falsely claimed the shooting had nothing to do with the zone. (1/3)
Both fatal shootings, while circumstances remain murky, have direct and undeniable ties to the occupation of that area. The first victim's family blames the zone for preventing a proper emergency response to shooting. The second shooting involved armed #CHOP protesters. (2/3)
Meanwhile, it is clear Seattle leaders do not have a plan to deal with the situation in #CHOP and the related violence. Council members are trying harder to find excuses for the violence than they are to address it. (3/3) #Q13FOX
(4/4) To claim the shootings would have happened as they did with or without existence of CHOP is more than disingenuous. It's startlingly irresponsible.

In her letter, Mayor Durkan takes particular issue with Councilwoman Sawant allegedly leading protesters to her house for a speech. For background, Mayor Durkan is part of Washington's Address Confidentiality Program due to her work as a United States Attorney. 1/4
The program exists to protect those who might be stalking/DV victims, as well as others who may be subject to credible threats on their lives. As a former U.S. Attorney for Seattle, the danger is particularly poignant given the 2001 murder of Tom Wales at his home in Seattle. 2/4
Durkan wrote in her letter that Sawant's protest at her home showed "reckless disregard of the safety of my family and children. In addition, during or after Councilmember Sawant’s speech at that rally, her followers vandalized my home by spray-painting obscenities." 3/4

BREAKING: This morning, Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan transmitted a letter to the City Council, urging members to take action against Councilwoman Sawant, up to and including expulsion. The letter listed several accusations against Sawant that the mayor thinks are grounds to do so:
Including:

-Allowing hundreds of protesters into City Hall after hours, putting safety of city workers at risk
-Leading a protest to mayor's home, despite the fact her address is protected due to threats stemming from her work as U.S. Attorney
As well as:

-Using her position to encourage protesters to occupy city property (the East Precinct).

The addition of concrete barriers in #CHOP this morning is actually very significant for a couple reasons.

1) This is a clear sign that the city is letting protesters stay long term. They are specifically adding wood around concrete barriers for people to decorate.
2) Barriers help prevent cars from driving into protesters (a very real threat as we have already seen), while still allowing a lane of travel for emergency responders.
3) This is an important step toward coexistence and the fact protesters are on board is important. The city is giving them increased safety, in exchange for increased access. People live and work in the #CHOP zone and they deserve emergency services. #Q13FOX
