On June 18, #SCOTUS ruled that Trump administration efforts to end #DACA program are not legal. We asked @GCorreaCabrera: What does this decision means for young, undocumented immigrants and for the future of US immigration policy overall? Follow this thread for the answer.
"This decision has been touted as a big win for more than 640,000 young immigrants who were brought to the US as children. It provides a temporary reprieve to the beneficiaries of #DACA; they will not be immediately deported. However, as @PayanTony,
director @BakerCtrUSMEX explains, #SCOTUS “did not rule that the program is or is not constitutional. It simply ruled that the administration’s efforts to shut down the program were illegal because it failed to follow the Administrative Procedures Act,
which requires specific steps and justifications before such programs are closed”. Hence, the final outcome is quite uncertain, as well as the fate of DACA recipients and other undocumented immigrant workers who live in the shadows, but contribute significantly to the US economy.
President Trump has signaled that he plans to submit new paperwork to achieve his goal. What is more, a decision on DACA exclusively does not provide a comprehensive solution for the human problem of undocumented migration and its damaging economic consequences.
A new ruling should consider comprehensive immigration reform and a path towards citizenship for those who 'Make America Great'."
