#SolvingTheClimateCrisis demands urgency--reaching net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050 requires a rapid and far-reaching transition at an unprecedented scale. C180 believes CDR must be a part of an ambitious decarbonization agenda, and we appreciate that the @ClimateCrisis cmte agrees
After power reading all 500+ pages, we commend @HouseDemocrats for putting forth a roadmap that addresses the full portfolio of carbon capture approaches. Soils, forests, DAC, CO2 storage, BECCS! We’re thrilled to see many of the reccs we put forth incorporated throughout.
The @ClimateCrisis cmte highlights that it’s more important than ever that we listen to experts and unite behind science🔬-- they use the IPCC 1.5 report to set mid-century emissions targets and rely on @theNASEM to provide robust, science-driven information. Guess what? So do we
At the core, we need robust innovation policy and significant federal investment $$$ to support carbon removal at scale. The report supports @theNASEM recommendation to create a cross-sectoral, multi-agency federal CDR RD&D program -- @EFIForTheFuture depiction of this below👇
The US is also well positioned to become a global leader of DAC, but it needs gov’t support to overcome key barriers. Drawing from introduced bipartisan legislation, the cmte directs Congress to prioritize DAC R&D, fund commercial demos, and establish a DAC tech prize program.
We can’t have a conversation about DAC w/o mentioning 45Q! As outlined in @rhodium_group’s Capturing Leadership report (that @Carbon_180 supported), the cmte calls to eliminate the plant threshold, extend the commence construction deadline and extend the credit payout period.
Looking to give DAC one more push? Well, the cmte calls for federal procurement of synthetic fuels, including those made from CO2 captured from DAC - ultimately supporting bringing carbon to the market and reducing emissions of the US military from aviation and vehicles.
What if we told you that the @ClimateCrisis team also supports our work in developing standards for LCAs & land-use impacts wrt BECCS AND expanding research efforts for carbon storage & carbon mineralization? We know...carbon min is in the BIG leagues!
We said this report is expansive, and we meant it. The ag callouts in this report are music to our soil carbon ears 🎻Our Leading with Soils work highlights 3 key barriers that farmers & ranchers are facing, and the report includes many of our recommendations to address them!
Increase technical assistance, fully fund and reduce the administrative burden of USDA conservation programs, fund soil health demo trials, R&D efforts to develop cost-effective methods to measure & quantify soil carbon sequestration -- shall we continue? Because there is more…
Don’t forget nature’s CDR powerhouse 🌳💪 Forests are seeing increased investment for conservation and reforestation across public AND private lands! Not to mention wide-spread incorporation of climate-informed and carbon-conscious management. Who else feels like hugging a tree?
But best of all, the cmte calls for expanded R&D into carbon sequestration in forests. We’re talking about studies, mapping, reporting on existing climate data, & implementing a forest carbon monitoring system. Hm, maybe the trees should hug us. 🤔
The need for equity in climate policy can’t be emphasized enough. Solving the #ClimateCrisis requires an equitable, just transition to a new carbon economy that includes everyone. We commend the cmte on its flawless integration of EJ across sectors, technologies, and solutions.
We’re excited to see the cmte’s recommended improvements to the EJSCREEN tool. But, we’re even MORE excited for the EPA and other federal agencies to begin using this tool for equity assessments of potential policies and projects.
#SolvingTheClimateCrisis may be a challenge, but it is also an opportunity to reimagine the US economy in a way that is more equitable, healthier and prosperous. We need the federal gov’t to #ActOnClimate and enact a bold suite of policies to de-risk, incentivize and support CDR
This report is a first step -- but we call on Congress to act and turn these recommendations into legislation. We need to pass bold, sweeping CDR bills and leverage the federal government’s ability to bring businesses, research institutions and communities alike to the table.
