💜 PROTEST SAFETY TIPS - A LOVING THREAD 💜
1. PROTEST TIPS
We know many of you are engaging with protests happening all across the country and the world. Read through our safety tips to make sure you are looking after yourselves and each other if you are planning to attend.
2. PRE PLAN
Plan how to get there and how you are getting home. If you are going with others, arrange a meet up spot away from the protest point in case you split up. Let a family member or close friend know you're going.
3. TO WEAR
Try to wear plain clothing. Dress for the weather (Do you need a rain mac, sun cream... maybe both?). Wear a face mask/covering.
4. TO REMEMBER
5. If you feel unsafe, it's okay to leave the protest site. Tell a friend if you need to do this. Try to uphold 2m social distancing if possible. If you feel ill or have covid-19 symptoms, stay at home.
5. TO BRING
Water and food.
Hand sanitiser.
Monday.
A portable phone charger if you have one.
Emergency contacts written on paper or your arm.
6. TO SAY/CHANT
Is there a phrase that you want to highlight on your placard, such as:
#BLACKLIVESMATTER #PROTECTTRANSYOUTH #TransRightsAreHumanRights #BlackTransLivesMatter
Think about a message you want the world to know/be reminded of
7. LOOK AFTER YOU
If you're unable to attend a physical protest, tune into one online. Lots of protests have a virtual way to join. Ask organisers, have a look at the event pages for more information. We recommend changing screen name/profile pic so you can join anonymously.
8. AFTER CARE
Think about what you can do after the protest to look after you, check in with how you are feeling. Protesting can be physically + emotionally exhausting. Do something chilled, social media break, take a shower/bath, have quiet time, listen to music, have a nap.
9. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
@GBCLegal have lots of really helpful information about protesting, your rights and keeping safe. Have a look at their 'know your rights' section before attending the protest.
