Thread: for those interested in such things, the revised Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Classifications are out. Focusing on the areas I'm involved in, a few things to note. #research #twitterstorians #GLAM #universities
Starting with the FoR (Field of Research) codes, under 43: History, heritage and archaeology we have Heritage, archive and museum studies, which includes: Archival, repository and related studies; Critical heritage, museum and archive studies; and Digital heritage.
Historical studies is also under 43. Good to see the 'excluding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history' has been removed from the 'Australian history' code. Also, note 430306: Digital history
There is now a whole top-level code for Indigenous Studies. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, language and history includes codes for areas like curatorial, archives and museum studies; history; repatriation; and ways of knowing, being, and doing.
No explicit categories for digital work in the Indigenous studies space though, which seems a shame to me.
Art history, theory and criticism is under Creative arts and writing. Given there are codes for digital history and digital heritage it's a pity there's no code for digital art history/digital visual analysis or similar.
Speaking of the digital, Information and computing sciences includes Library and information studies, which includes things like Digital curation and preservation. Note that digital preservation is in the library space, quite separate from archives, heritage, etc.
And there's a Data management and data science code which might be of interest for some projects in the DH space and beyond.
A couple of comments on the SEO codes (Socio-Economic Objectives). First, there are two blocks in 13: Culture and Society to note, Heritage, and Understanding past societies. But unlike in the FoR codes heritage here doesn't explicitly include museums, archives, etc.
For those, go to 22: Information and communication services, which includes Information services, and under that we find: Digital humanities; Library and archival services; and Museum and gallery collections; alongside things like News collection services and Open access
Which seems like a bit of a strange grab-bag. Why is digital humanities there? And why are GLAM sector institutions seen as information services in the same category as news collection services? Not quite sure of the logic there.
Anyway, that's what I spotted on a first pass. Interested in people's thoughts! [end thread]
