Can't say often enough that a big part of why the US is failing is that we have full-on incompetents managing the federal effort.
We are being led by fools. It's been just two and a half weeks since @VP assured us the case counts were going down. wsj.com/articles/there…
We now face the prospect of not reopening schools in the fall because foolish, arrogant governors felt that reopening bars and salons in May was more important. azfamily.com/news/continuin…
Our leaders wasted the month of April by failing to invest in suppression. They lost patience in May and reopened early, driven by magical thinking that the worst had passed. They lost control in June as cases surged amidst their indifference.

God help us in July.
The country has sacrificed immensely, suffered immensely, and these fools have squandered it. Utterly squandered it.

I know this is an intemperate thread but I am furious. Just furious.
Three months ago I tweeted this. And, well, yup.

We are trapped with a White House leadership culture that will not acknowledge failure, and so cannot correct it, and so will continue to fail. That's the essential problem.
And that inability to admit failure, and failure to course correct, is all about Trump's ego.

No matter what the issue - a petty thing like crowd size or a profound thing like a pandemic that is killing thousands of Americans, the President's approach is the same.
The federal government must tout his own great success, no matter how disconnected from reality. And force the rest of the government to do the same.

Inauguration crowds
Hurricane Maria
Sharpie-Gate
Coronavirus

The pattern repeats. The federal apparatus adapts to Trump's ego.
It is impossible to mobilize the full force of the federal government toward a problem that the President's arrogance and ignorance prevent him from understanding or taking seriously.

And so here we are.
The emperor has no clothes, everyone knows it, but his political allies are choosing to watch tens of thousands more Americans die than to candidly admit that, and deal with its implications.

Pandemics test political systems more than health systems, and our is failing.
