@IDreamOfNinja @AngelaLovesNY So a little embarrassing story about me: when I was high school age, I was totally one of those girls that “just got along better with guys.” Everything I did was for male attention. I had few girlfriends and couldn’t understand why girls were “mean” to me. —
@IDreamOfNinja @AngelaLovesNY When I got to college I had trouble making lasting friendships with women, for reasons that should have been obvious, and so I joined a sorority, and thus learned a whole host of new and unhealthy ways to be “friends” with women. —
@IDreamOfNinja @AngelaLovesNY When I experienced abuse during that time, none of them believed me, and that hurt deeply, although was in many ways indicative of the fact that our friendships were based almost entirely on making ourselves more appealing, and abuse is just not appealing, ladies. —
@IDreamOfNinja @AngelaLovesNY When I got to law school I was alone. Across the country. Unpopular and unknowing how to change it. My roommate became one of the first real best friends I’ve ever had. She taught me how to care about our shared experiences. She always had my back. She was my rock. —
@IDreamOfNinja @AngelaLovesNY And it wasn’t until she was a friend to me that I realized how much more valuable that was than all the things I had tossed girlfriends aside for in the past. It was wonderful to cheer for her. To cry at her wedding. To confide in her. —
@IDreamOfNinja @AngelaLovesNY And so now when I see other women behaving in self protective ways, I think of myself, and (although I can’t always muster it, some things are too much) I try to show them kindness and remind them that when they need us, feminism will be there for them. /end
