Hi! Let me recommend what turned out to be an extremely timely read for me last month about feminism and how the battle over the ERA in the 70s shaped the conservative movement we see today. We are living in Phyllis Schlafly’s world.
Finally read the Hungarian Pastry Shop piece and... I’m crying? Have always missed it since moving away from the neighborhood, so relieved and glad it’s surviving. nytimes.com/2020/08/21/t-m…
When I first met @NathanEnglander in Paris at @Shakespeare_Co years ago I was feeling homesick and we talked about how much we loved the Hungarian Pastry Shop and that “Taxi” was streaming on youtube and it was the best and now all a jumble of good associations.
Also just before I moved to Paris I was at HPS and met Bill Murray there, who was very nice and was recommending yoga to a grad student sitting near him and just kind of involved me in the conversation? He is very tall.
Currently looking up early voting period for every state, what are you doing this Friday night?
Ok so as I’m going through all the states, am learning that some states you can vote quite early: Michigan early voting starts *Sept 21* and Illinois early voting starts Sept 24.
Do we need to encourage safe-during-a-pandemic in-person early voting??
Wait so... what happens to a state like Oregon, that DOES NOT offer in-person voting? What happens to voting in a state where the only way people can vote is THROUGH USPS?
As we gather in protest, we must continue to take care of each other, and this includes taking precautions against spreading COVID-19. We created #protectourprotestnyc to be a resource on how to stay safe before, during, and after hitting th streets. Our mission statement: 2/
“There were political decisions that were made... we lost 20,000 hospital beds in the past decade.” @zellnor4ny on persistent healthcare disparities in central Brooklyn; problems such as asthma are as prevalent as they were when he grew up inhaling the fumes of the B41 buses.
“They got incredibly aggressive at the drop of a dime.” @zellnor4ny discussing being pepper sprayed and cuffed by police at a peaceful protest at Barclays last weekend
“I was hoping to act as a peacemaker...unfortunately, my credentials, my clothing, my conversations with law enforcement, none of that mattered in the heat of the moment.” @zellnor4ny
