One reason I find this interesting is most of the #maskmandates so far have been in places where Democrats control local politics. This would be the first one in a more Republican city. #idpol #idahoCovid19 postregister.com/news/local/ida… via @thepostregister
Bonneville County’s quirky. The local GOP central committee is one of the most conservative in the state but the City Council is actually pretty liberal, it’s a mix of Republicans, Democrats and independents. They recently voted to expand the local anti-discrimination ordinance.
Mayor Casper is a Republican but a more moderate one. Bryan Smith and Doyle Beck spent a lot of money trying to unseat her in 2017. As for local GOP primary voters they’re all over. This city has produced some of the most conservative and most moderate Republicans in the #idleg
Idaho Falls is definitely Republican but not as overwhelmingly so as the more rural areas around it. GOP candidates tend to get high-50s% of the vote in competitive elections, which is a solid win by any measure but not the crushing majorities you see in, say, Jefferson County.
Generally speaking the downtown and South Boulevard/numbered streets precincts are more Democratic and the rest of the city is more Republican.
District 33 (Idaho Falls) was the eighth-best district for Medicaid expansion, and the best out of the districts that are represented by all Republicans. It did a little better here than in District 29 (Pocatello), which is represented by all Democrats.
