We've been working for years to get @Facebook to address their civil rights failures. The release of this civil rights audit exposes Facebook as a company that facilitates hate speech, violence, disinformation and bias while shortchanging civil rights.
We've forced @Facebook to expand its appeals process, address censorship and adopt content moderation policies against white nationalists. And through the audit, we've seen marginal progress on policing unlawful ad targeting, but it hasn't gone nearly far enough.
Notably absent from @Facebook is a commitment to establish a C-suite civil rights position, our key demand. The VP position is a good step but will require full resources to be effective. We need civil rights infrastructure with resources to handle the scale of these issues.
We won’t settle for anything less than consistency in FB's commitments to civil rights and an unequivocal commitment to anti-racism in harmony with free expression. And we will keep pushing companies to commit to #StopHateForProfit until it happens.
