A thread:
Death of Hachalu is 1 of #Ethiopia’s recent most tragic events. He is a hero for the Oromo & a popular amongst Ethiopians.
But he wasn’t behind the reforms that emerged in 2018. His song fueled Oromo Protests? Yes. But Oromo protests alone didn’t bring Abiy to power.
The suffering of Somalis under Abdi Illey, the suffering of the Anuak/Gambella (their massacres for land grab), the injustice against the Afar, the suffering of the Amhara for 27 years under EPRDF, the gross human rights violations the regime committed were also major reasons.
Oromo protests, though crucial, weren’t, in any way, enough to bring about any change let alone an Oromo PM to office. But ethno-nationalists with help from ‘Ethiopia observers’ arguing that the PM is betraying the movement that brought him to power is misinformation at its best.
Ethno-nationalists are all about misrepresentation of history or any thing that is considered a fact. The audacity they show in thier interpretation of history of last few years is just unbelievable.
What makes me sad is that his death was followed by the death of many innoncents. Ppl lost their properties. Many non-Oromos were killed and displaced. Oromo ethno-nationalists didn’t give a damn about it. They didn’t condemn the atrocities. Sadly, some justified it.
Abiy’s talk of unity, his work to mend severed ethnic ties, efforts to rein in peace & stability are always opposed by Oromo ethno-nationalists.
For them, an Oromo PM can only work for the Oromo. For them, an Oromo pm must elevate Oromia above everything & Oromos above everyone.
The whole world needs to listen to the worlds of the father, brother, wife and entire family members of Hachalu! They were prevented by extreme Oromo ethno-nationalists to grieve thier loss. They saw the death of thier beloved son being used for political purposes by the ethnoes.
But at least, there is one beautiful fact. Oromo ethno-nationalists do not represent the entire Oromo, who are as peace loving as any Ethiopian group. Just like TPLF’s anti-Ethiopia posture doesn’t represent the great people of Tigray, OLF Shene is never a voice of entire Oromo.
