Apart from #Hindi, the two most spoken languages in #Uttarakhand(UA) are Garhwali(2.5 mil speakers, 23%) and Kumaoni(2 mil speakers, 20%).
Both the languages have a thriving entertainment industry, rich local literature and are active languages.

The demand to create a separate state, Uttarakhand(UA), was accompanied by the demand to promote the regional languages.

Garhwali is a "vulnerable" language acc. to UNESCO i.e. without decent effort to conserve it, it can die out.
So the people of UA have pushed to add it to the Scheduled Languages of India.

In 2010, a bill was presented in Parliament to do that but wasn't even discussed.
In 2010, instead, Sanskrit was added as Additional Official Language of the State.
It was an insult to the effort of 5 decades of local struggle.
