The #HongKong government's #coronavirus slogan has gone from "fight virus together" to "Together, We Fight the Virus!" Chief Executive Carrie Lam is expected to meet the press at 8pm.
Lam to announce more stringent social distancing measures amid a new wave of #coronavirus in #HongKong. There were 253 cases in the past 8 days, including 182 local cases and 71 imported cases. 128 involved clusters at restaurants, taxi drivers and elderly centre, said Lam.
New regulations:
-Travellers from countries/cities deemed as high risk areas have to test negative for coronavirus before they are allowed to board the flight.
-More stringent social distancing measures. 12 types of facilities (game arcades, gym etc) to close for 7 days
- Customers are not allowed to dine in at restaurants from 6pm - 5am. Maximum of four people at one table.
- Public gathering of over four people banned.
- All passengers must wear masks on public transportation
Measures to take effect at the midnight of 15th July, i.e. Wednesday.
Government will be providing #coronavirus tests to employees of four sectors: elderly centres, restaurants, property management and taxi drivers. An estimate of around 400,000 people.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam thanked the Shenzhen municipal government for providing help with mass testing at a reduced cost. "Their work gives us a lot of confidence." The govt is still working with them to sort out the logistics, said Lam.
Not wearing masks on public transportation poses a threat to passengers and drivers alike, said Sophia Chan, Secretary for Food and Health. Those who refuse to put on a mask/get off will receive a penalty of HK$5,000.
"We are in a situation of a three-way tug of war," says Lam, referring to economic impact, social acceptability and public health. "This is a time for us to put our act together to fight this latest reemergence of cases."
On the primary election, "there is no such thing as a primary in HK's election system," said Lam. "Election is a very serious and solemn matter in every jurisdiction. We will not tolerate any practices that try to interfere, disrupt, cause confusion to the LegCo election."
Lam said govt received a large number of complaints related to the two-day activities:
- cause unfairness to upcoming election
- breach group gathering ban
- breach privacy protection. privacy commissioner looking into this area
Carrie Lam issued a "further note of warning": if the ultimate goal of the primary election is to deliver 35+ with the objective of resisting every policy of the HKSAR government, it may fall in the category of subverting state power under the National Security Law.
"To ram up the testing capacity is not an easy task. We managed with support of Shenzhen municipal government, who helped us and even sent experts to us to secure the latest test provider. I can assure you the estimated cost will be in public domain," said Lam.
