1/ @GavinNewsom made the right call shutting down indoor establishments in CA.
When the epidemic is spreading this fast, the brakes need to be put back on ASAP.
But, that is also a signal that the response has been a failure to the point of near lockdown- again.
Lockdowns are not a "public health response" per se; not in the way they are being implemented.
They are an emergency measure to avert major crisis.
Locking down meant to drastically slow down viral spread, so that the public health system could handle reopening *slowly*
Without setting that system up, you haven't solved the problem.
as thousands keep getting sick, and eventually dying;
people lose their jobs/health insurance;
society and the economy get pummeled;
state leaders sit befuddled
it is really unclear why public health metrics did not guide your reopening strategies; why major investments in public health were not made for surveillance/testing/tracing/isolating/masking etc
And unless something drastically changes, it won't be the last time.
Come winter, we are going to be dealing with a much scarier double-epidemic beast when influenza rolls back around to join #covid19
