My head hurts from the spinning this government is doing with its “planning” for public school reopenings. As a parent, I need my child to be in school all day, every day so that I can go to work as a teacher. 1/
As a high-risk individual with preexisting medical conditions, I am frankly not convinced that my employer will be able to keep me or my students safe. 7 cents per child is simply NOT enough to safely reopen schools at full capacity. It is not enough to buy a bottle of soap. 2/
School boards should not have to take away from programs and services for our most vulnerable students in order to pay for necessary safety measures. We need to plan with our most vulnerable in mind. 3/
Yes, safely reopening schools will cost the province money. It’s money wisely invested-we cannot take short cuts with something this important. We need to do everything in our power to safeguard our children and our school staff. 4/
It’s been traumatic for many kids to miss out on in-person schooling. It will be even more traumatic for them to come back to school and see multiple classmates, educational assistants, and teachers die a few weeks later because proper precautions were not in place. 5/
Why on earth are we reopening BARS before schools, especially with the data coming out of Montreal?!? We are lucky to have community transmission under control-this should be the time to stay the course and prioritize the reopening of businesses that have a lower risk profile. 6/
As it stands, this government has placed our children and our wider economy (the viability of which depends on schools and childcare being open) at risk.
