It was kinda funny when Doug Ford showed up hawking cheap beer. Kinda. But it stopped being funny a long time ago.

Fast forward to 2021.
We now have a massive pile (words purposely chosen) of…

…failures, hostility, disinformation, and outright attacks on the very things that many hold dear in this province: healthcare, education, care of our elderly, key elements of our social safety net, and the environment to name but a few…

…and much / all of it has been in the interest of privatization, corporate greed, cronyism, self-service, self-promotion, ego and pure profit.

In addition, this government has sowed division and hate. Racists have been subtly, and not so subtly, nudged into action.

NEW from @krushowy: Toronto’s public and Catholic boards say June graduations will go ahead online as planned virtually, despite Premier Doug Ford’s urging that schools hold in-person, outdoor celebrations for students in all grades this month. #onted…
Other schools and boards around the province have also started notifying parents they, too, will stick with virtual grads, prompting the premier to issue a statement late Friday saying he is “extremely disappointed.” /2…
On Friday, the Toronto District School Board sent an email to families saying even though it has been a challenging year, virtual plans have already been set, and money spent, and “there is very limited time to plan in-person events of this size.” /3…

Day 440 of isolation. Perfectly healthy child attending virtually because @Sflecce & @fordnation refused to adequately fund #onted to ensure @ONThealth & @GovCanHealth recommendations were met in schools.
Why weren't these same experts advocating for ALL students in the fall? 1/
Our most vulnerable not provided a safe place to learn; otherwise healthy children sacrificing their own #mentalhealth, bearing the burden of protecting the lives of their vulnerable/high-risk loved ones... 2/
Why did these experts permit schools to open in the first place without adequate safety measures in place? 3/

Six in ten Ontarians are living in health regions with high or substantial #covid19 school transmission risk. #onted #onpoli
Estimated school transmission risk levels for public health units, with population on the left (in thousands). This does not account for future vaccinations, higher transmission due to B.1.617 variant growth, low testing, future opening of businesses, or high local hotspot risks. Image
All I am asking for is a little #precautionaryprinciple after so many failed attempts to stem infections without school closures. All I'm asking is that we wait a few more weeks to actually see B.1.617 data and open cautiously where transmission risks are lowest. Just this once. Image

Opinion: If we really want to improve kids mental health and are bent on opening schools in high transmission risk areas, then why not bring them outdoors? It would be a teaching moment as well on how to reduce personal risks and help the community. Kids would love this. #onted
I believe the ratio of risk is ~18:1 safer for outdoors vs indoors and it requires zero ventilation enhancements in short term. Let kids enjoy summer outdoors.
I'm sure there are hurdles including hybrid learning, weather, etc. But the concept of in person education does not demand that we do it in the highest risk venues (indoors).

@sunflowercyn @AmyfStuart @MommyGearest @TorontoStar Sadly, the #SpecialEducation portfolio is massively huge &the needs greatly outweigh funding provided. In light of the sudden outcry for the (potentially) premature return to school by people who are ‘newly’ concerned about youth mental health...

I’ll echo the thoughts of many friends/colleagues when I say:
“Where were you before now?”

I’m reminded of a student...
...of mine from earlier in my career. She struggled with mental health issues and often flirted with suicide. In addition to reporting the situation (as my job required), there were a number of occasions where I counselled her, and encouraged her to ‘stay with us’...
...and to keep moving forward. I specifically remember telling her that the world was a better place with her in it.

Thankfully, she did ‘stay’, and is now married with kids of her own.

Her story is a happy one. But I’ve also witnessed students (too many)...

People seem taken aback by the anger and frustration expressed by #onted over the past couple of days.

Marking break =🧵time.

You are an educator...
You are told the plan will be the “best” in the country...

...and 1 week in, classes are collapsed to maximize class-sizes, rather than meet the recommendations of the government’s own experts. 2/10
You are told that no expense will be spared for the children...

...and then you learn that the Gov ignored the health recommendations and watered down their plan 3/10…

I appreciate the interest and enthusiasm I'm seeing to find creative solutions for the remaining weeks of school. We advocated tirelessly for many of these options throughout the pandemic, and found they require a significant amount of planning and new resources.#onted #onpoli 1/
I'd love for my daughter to finish her final year at her school in-person with friends and educators who have seen her through these seven years. With four weeks left my hopes are now pinned on better when our kids return in September. #onted #onpoli 2/4
This school year never had to be this way. Our government chose not to prioritize the necessary steps to keep schools consistently, safely open. The way Ontario has experienced #COVID19 was preventable, and our kids have paid a high price. #onted #onpoli 3/4

All this chatter this morning about #OutdoorLearning in #onted is good. But it once again highlights the lack of understanding that the general population has about how a school works.
🧵time (because this is a good way of procastinating)
Q: What's so hard about taking your class outside?

A: Nothing if you are talking about a single lesson. But the conversation is about moving a majority of learning outside, rain or shine.

So what's the big deal?
Yards. Some yards are huge fields with shade trees. Most are concrete playgrounds with a patch of grass (if lucky).

You can't have kids out in the sun for 6 hours straight.

It is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia.

I'm worried that because #onted is all virtual right now, many educators won't talk about it because "parents can hear".

I hope families heard the discussions we had this morning.
I hope families heard these grade four students explaining what othering is.

What homophobia and transphobia look like.

That it isn't all just about active hate.

I hope families heard the stories of harm, frustration, defiance that were shared this morning.
I hope families heard the voices of these brilliant children who are regularly brave enough to gently call each other out on problematic speech, on assuming someone's identity.

I hope families heard these kids talk about being misgendered. Being targeted. Being scared.

Here is an aspect of the fractured learning model (aka #hybrid) I haven't seen anyone address.

I am teaching virtually this year so I don't have experience with this hideous model.

What I can tell you about my online classes is this...

A short 🧵 for #onted

➡️We are very much a 'group'. No one feels left out and everyone feels like part of the class.

➡️All of the kids are learning at home and share that in common. It might seem like a minor deal but it's a pretty big thing they have in common.

➡️They chat. They interact. On their own, they form class chat groups (that I have nothing to do with).

➡️When they're learning, they see whatever I am screen-sharing with them & my face. They tell me it feels like I am speaking to *them*. They aren't passive observers here.

#Onted, who would be able to provide data on number of classrooms, students per classroom etc for Ontario so that I can do some capital cost and operational costs on air quality related upgrades? More than the 2015 facility condition list.…
2/ I'm thinking of some per-classroom budget numbers balancing operable windows/fan, HRV, filtration, upper room UVGI, including energy costs/penalty, GHG emissions, maintenance.
3/ I can do analysis per classroom with an "average" class size or some distribution bins and then multiply through by total classrooms to arrive at a total $ figure.

They chose to try to control the appearance of the situation, rather than taking more care to make our classrooms safer. My kids returned to crowded classrooms next to empty ones, and the only ventilation strategy was open windows. #onpoli #onted…
.@sflecce's spokesperson continues to insist educators and opposition wanted schools closed all year.

This is simply untrue. As a parent I advocated tirelessly for a safe return to school where my kids thrive. The government didn't take school safety seriously. #onpoli #onted
Kids, educators, and families across Ontario deserved better than this. We saw through the gaslighting all year. We saw the government's flimsy measures fail us. We received the letters about cases and outbreaks in our schools. We isolated and pivoted and did our best. #onted

An education thread.

This past week, as a ‘start-to-the-day-reflection’, I shared one of those “If the World Was A Village of 100 People” type videos with my class.

I’ve seen them before. But the stats are always sobering.
15% are illiterate.
13% have no clean water.
20% don’t have electricity. 25% don’t have adequate shelter.
75% don’t have internet access.
90% can’t access post secondary education.
A staggering 70% are malnourished.
1% are starving...a ‘small’ number, but that translates to 75 million people.

What does it all mean?
It means that despite the struggles of the past year...with lockdowns, masks, sanitizing, virtual this and many ways, we’re very lucky.

In no way does this minimize the suffering that COVID has brought...particularly with those in LTC homes, those who have...

Hearing the trustees of a publicly-funded school board in #onted try to justify not flying the #PRIDE flag is reopening some deep, raw wounds tonight.

They're trying to justify their hate with arguments about cost, "competing groups for the month of June," logistics.
As a member of the #2SLGBTQ+ community, I know this isn't about any of the excuses they're giving tonight in #HCDSB. This is about hate. This is about believing that some of their students and their families are inherently less valued, less worthy of respect, *less than*.
Why are these discussions even allowed in publicly-funded institutions? We have a Human Rights Code and it's pretty clear about this.

#2SLGBTQ+ people have the right to exist without having to justify that existence and participation in society.

Text from my 10 yr old child this morning:

I hate this
I hate my life
I hate it

This is your legacy @fordnation @Sflecce @celliottability @ETFOeducators

You’ve irreparably destroyed a generation.

#onted #etfo #FireOST
To those saying blame @JustinTrudeau - believe me I do. But he’s not the CONSERVATIVE leader of ON closing the damn schools. @fordnation had a choice. This issue is on him. And I’m a single issue voter right now when it comes to my kids. I hate Trudeau but this is on him.
And to those that criticize my kids use of cell phone - honestly GFY. You have no idea why and how we use it. It is for calls and texts only and it is a way to communicate when we’re apart. Kids can also text from iPads. So seriously GFY and get off my thread.

I just heard from the staff rep at another high school in our system that a student who tested positive had no close contacts in class, only on the bus. Public health didn’t inform the teacher. (1/6) #FordfailedOntario #onted #ontpoli #FireLecce
At this same school, two students who sat beside each other in class both tested positive but it wasn’t an outbreak. (2/6)
They’re doing voluntary asymptomatic testing this Friday starting at 2:30 PM—school will be over. (3/6)

I’m irritated. A 🧵
1/ I’m irritated that @fordnation and @Sflecce maintain the narrative that “schools are’s community spread!” FYI...schools ARE communities. And they are IN communities. And there is COVID in them. So stop expecting people 2 believe it’s not #onted
2/ I’m irritated that they continue to hope that the majority of Ontario’s residents are too out of touch with reality to see through their half measures. Ontario is also a community. And it’s growing increasingly savvy.
3/ I’m irritated by a press conference in a crises that was meant more to give Ontario politicians a pat on their own backs, and blame its citizens for the problems we have now, when all leadership and decisive action seems to have taken an extended leave.
