This World Snakes Day, try to know the popular myths about Snakes and the actual facts behind. All we need to know is, Snakes are crucial part of our ecosystem and we should conserve them. Read Thread!
Myth 1: Snakes Drink Milk

Just like any other animal, they drink water to keep them hydrated. When snakes are kept starved for days and offered milk, they do drink to keep them hydrated. They are cold-blooded reptiles. Forcing them to drink milk could sometimes kill them.
Myth 2- Snakes have Diamond in their head or throat

Just like other animals or us, they are made of cells & muscles. There is no such diamond or any other precious stone in their body. They cannot hypnotise anyone. Lots of snakes are getting killed for these reasons.
Myth 3 - Snakes go miles to take revenge on their partner’s death, they capture photo in their mind.

Snake's brain is not that developed. They chase only their prey's not anyone else. Infact their eyesight comparatively poor. They will not harm unless they are triggered.
Myth 4 - Snakes can dance to music

They try to replicate the movement of their prey or anything that think is a potential threat, only when those objects are in their visible range. They don't have ears. They can sense vibrations. Snake charmers use these facts to their benefit.
Myth 5 - All snakes are poisonous or venomous.

No. Snakes donot bite at the first instance. Sometimes their bite is accidental. Not all snakes have toxic venoms. It is said India has abt 270 snake species &60 are venomous. If treated on time with anti-venoms, life can be saved.
Myth 6 - Snakes can have multiple heads

Unless if there is any genetic deformity no snake can have multiple heads. At max two heads, which are common in reptiles, caused by genetic disorder in rare cases. Never confuse mythological characters with reality.
The big four snakes in India that are related to deaths are - Cobra, Russel viper, Krait, Saw scaled viper - their venoms are toxic. There are anti- venoms which can treat, provided it is done on time. They are protected species, take assistance of local forest or fire dept.
Snakes are protected under Wildlife protection Act 1972, so killing or possessing them is wrong in India. Snakes are listed under various protected scheduled lists. Never try to harm them, it is understandable that they can be scary at times, but do call Forest Dept for rescue.
There are more such myths related to snakes. Please try to think and recollect the basic science we had read during our school days. They are more like any other animal. Religious beliefs maybe used to protect and conserve them, but never to harm and threaten these animals.
