This morning an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck off the coast of Alaska. A tsunami warning (now cancelled) has been issued.

I asked myself simple questions:
- Who was the first to tweet?
- What is happening on the ground when a tsunami warning is issued?

1 min after, at 8:37 AM, Tyler who lived in Kodiak AK published this video
At 8:51 AM, @stevenjgibbons, geoscientist, tweeted about "the data of the closest broadband stations clip - here station AK.CHN of the Alaskan network @AKearthquake - data openly available through @IRIS_EPO"

At 9:14 AM, so less than 1 hour after the first tsunami warning, this is what the headlights of evacuation of the Spit in Homer AK looked like
At 9:15 AM, the tsumani sirens were blaring in Homer
At 9:30 AM, sirens were blasting and helicopters were in the air. The impact was planned at 12:05 (local time)
At 9:54 AM, @JoeVigil, Anchor and reporter for KTVA TV, tweeted this video
At 10:37 AM, he tweeted another video

This time, this is an happy ending, the tsunami warnings has been cancelled.

<Thread> It’s 5:30am and I’m at the airport. Few days ago, M. X called me. He is the CEO of a big company and he thinks that one of his competitors hacked his phone. I’m going to the company HQ to analyse his phone and evaluate the situation.
This is my first post-lockdown flight. Even if the lockdown ended a while ago and the situation is under control in France, the majority of flights are still cancelled and the airport is empty. We are in the middle of the summer holidays, it should be full of people in theory.

1/ On one hand, social networks are the main source of information for most of us. In general, people don’t read. Images, short videos are the best way to get people’s attention.
On the other hand, disinformation is one of the biggest threat on our democracies

What should we do?
2/ The younger generation is more on SnapChat, Instagram and TikTok. Photos or videos are the main content on these platforms.

Can you see the point? How do we protect ourselves against these « new » ways to consume the information?
3/ We have to bring a technical solution to tackle this issue. Forget the « AI blockchain changing the world solutions ». I want a real time solution. Something which is able to tell me: Is this guy in the video tell the truth? What is the context of this image?

You have to understand something: China don’t care. They do whatever they want. They are keeping more than 1 million of muslims in « education camps » for years, without any international consequences. The balance of power is on their side, at least for now.
The world needs them and they know it. #Covid19 and the lack of mask almost everywhere in the world was another illustration of our dependency to China. Is it a good thing? Sure no. Can we do it differently? Probably yes but it will take years (decades?).
Thanks to Trump and #Covid19, the situation is even worst. China used this crisis to destabilize a little bit the power of balance where they need it. And it will continue. We are in the game and we are (force) to play together.
