“The leader of the nation’s premier public health agency Friday amplified President Trump’s call for schools to reopen, releasing new documents edited by the White House that gloss over risks and extol the benefits of in-person learning.” 1/ washingtonpost.com/education/cdc-…
“St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, the Maryland private academy that Trump’s 14-year-old son Barron Trump attends, told families this week they should prepare for an all-distance or hybrid-learning model in the fall.” 2/
Reading the new CDC statement on the importance of re-opening schools this fall, there is one glaring omission: any mention about the safety of educators. 3/ cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…
Buried at the bottom of the new CDC recommendation to re-open schools is a HUGE caveat! #COVID19 poses a low risk to kids “at least in areas with low community transmission.” That’s not where much of the country stands right now. 4/
Also, in searching citations in the new CDC recommendation to re-open schools, it appears to completely leave out the large-scale South Korea study that found teens are likely to spread #COVID19 as readily as adults 5/ nytimes.com/2020/07/18/hea…
Elsewhere on the CDC website, the recommendation for school administrators is still to “make decisions that take into account the level of community transmission.” Also, if you are re-opening, find extra space to reduce density inside the schools 6/
In case readers missed it, the CDC website again highlights the key consideration of #COVID19 transmission rates in the community - something this week’s statement glosses over 7/
What if your school re-opens and someone contracts #COVID19? The CDC says every single person in contact with the infected person should be tested and/or quarantine. If every class does not have an online learning option, what happens then? This could happen multiple times. 8/
Also, buried among CDC recommendations: “If community transmission levels cannot be decreased, school closure is an important consideration.” 9/
If your school system plans to re-open while #COVID19 shows uncontrolled spread - and administrators say they are relying on advice from @AmerAcadPeds - show them this clip from the organization's congressional testimony this week. 10/
And this! 11/
And some lawmakers want to exempt school systems from liability if they force educators into environments where they might contract #COVID19 12/12
"People who are contacted will need to quarantine their child for 14 days, according to the email. However, if parents can produce a doctor's note or a negative test result, their children will be able to return to school sooner." wbir.com/article/news/e…
