Chalukya Dynasty:Vatapi, Vengi and Kalyani
A. Chalukyas of Vatapi(535-753):
Chalukyas ruled Vatapi(Badami) in Maharashtra over 200 yrs. Jaisimha Sidhharaja laid its foundation in modest way.
Maharaja Pulkesin I his son ruled 535 to 536.He got epithet of
Of Rana -Vikrama and Shri Prithvi-Vallabha. He was ardent devotee of Shri Vishnu and performed Ashwamedh, Hiranyagarbh and Vajapeyi Yagya to proclaim his sovereignty.
Kirtivarman I was his son who ruled Vatapi till 597. In order to expand his kingdom he had battles with Pandyas
Cholas, Ganges and aslo battled against Vanga, Anga, Magadh and Kalinga. Mangalesha was his younger brother who assisted Kirtivarman in all his military campaigns. Chalukyas won over Maharashtra, Mysore and some parts of Tamilnadu.
Kartivarman I died young and Manglehsa became
the ruler.Pulkesin II, son of Kirtivarman I was a minor at that time. Mangalesha ruled till 610. He too was devotee of Shri Vishnu, got title of Vikranta and Parambhagwat. When Pulkesin II was grown up he became vocal for his succession but Mangalesha wanted his son to be King.
Mangalesha died in a battle with Pulkesin II in 611 and Pulkesin II came in power who ruled till 642.Pulkesjn II became most renowned in early chalukyas, he conquered Kadamba of Vanvasi and Ganges of South Mysore. He marked his victory over Elephants island and Rajpuri. Alupas,
Latas, Malwas were compelled to accept Chalukya suzerainty. Maharashtra,Konkan and Karnataka came under his domination and touched border on North. He defeated Harshavardhna and compelled him to accept his dominance till river Narmada.After him his son Vikramaditya I and grandson
Vinayaditya ruled till 696.The last ruler of Badami Chalukya was Kirtivarman II who ruled till 757. Rashrakuta king Dantidurga defeated Kirtivarman lead to end of Badami Chalukyas.
B. Chalukyas of Vengi: In 631Visnu- vardhan, younger brother of Pulkesin II laid his foundation in
Vizag.Vishnuvardhan ruled till 642 as an independent king but never offered assistance to badami chalukyas in battle with Rashtrakutas.
C.Chalukyas of Kalyani (973-1190): Chalukyas of Kalyani(Andhra) we're called Thalipa II, was feudatory of Rashtrakutas. Later Thalipa defeated
Karkka II, last ruler of Rashtrakutas. Thalipa was fearless warrior, got epithet of Mahrajadhiraja. Satyasraya, son of Thalipa scored victory over Cholas. Vikramaditya VI ruled over 50 yrs till 1124.Successors if Vikramaditya VI were incapbale and got defeated by Yadavas of
Devgiri lead to end of Kalyani Chalukyas.
