A thread about interns:

Our first virtual class came on this summer and, hoo boy, it's been a ride.

We were all working remotely, they joined the weekend the protests hit, and everything was chaos.

They had to get to know us, our work and our policies via just a screen. 1/
But while not idea, with the help of their mentors/professional partners here, they've adjusted so well and I am so proud of them.

I haven't done enough to promote them, so here's a thread to digest today: 2/
.@briah_lumpkins pitched a story about POC during Pride Month, and how this year is different. She took us inside an important story to open our eyes.

"Pride is about uprising." 3/

dispatch.com/news/20200626/…
.@RachelKaras3 went to a pharmacy unlike any other around here, one that has challenges meeting needs of the most vulnerable.

The pandemic has "created some desperate times." 4/

today.dispatch.com/express/monday…
.@sam_raudins has torn it up on our business desk, helping us understand why we couldn't find yeast or water guns this summer even tho it made no sense.

"First they came for the toilet paper ..." 5/
dispatch.com/business/20200…
.@ShillcockGeorge on our Statehouse coverage has hit everything from protests to Larry Householder to police reform.

"If you're violating the rules, then you need to be terminated." 6/

dispatch.com/news/20200616/…
.@tanishajanae, technically on our digital team, has flexed her writing muscle for day brighteners such as the reopening of the Columbus Zoo and covered important topics like public prayer.

"We couldn’t be happier. It’s like going to Disneyland." 7/
dispatch.com/news/20200612/…
.@maya_with_a_y is one of those journalists w/ a willingness to do fun stories the same as serious deep-dives. Take, for instance, her neighborhood chicken story.

“Their personalities are bigger than they are.” 8/

dispatch.com/lifestyle/2020…
.@GershonQuantez doing great work on our digital team(Insta anyone?) but also stepped up to write, such as how our masks say something about us.

"That’s how I picked them — what I like and that will help me express myself ..." 9/
dispatch.com/lifestyle/2020…
So in sum, as we close out July, look for more great work from them in August. And support these talented, young journalists who had to make the best of a difficult summer.

And - some of them are looking for jobs so let me know if I can make a connection.

Well, it seems a whole bunch of you are new here. So welcome aboard, followers. 👋

So that you are not surprised by your eventual disappointment, here's what you can expect: (You can't say you weren't warned) 1/
I start every morning with a good-news story o' the day, sometimes local, often not. The rule is it had to make me legit smile or cry happy tears. Like this one:

"I just want to bring brightness into people’s homes in all seasons." 2/

dispatch.com/news/20181210/…
My work I'm most proud of from last year was being part of the team that wrote "Suffering on Sullivant." It gave voice to people often ignored and exposed a long-forgotten area for what it was. And brought help to the people there.

"I am here. I care." 3/

Four years ago today I lost my former fiance to suicide. If you need help, please seek it. If you think someone is in trouble, please reach out to them. We can save lives.

Tomorrow is another day.

Some additional context, resources (trigger warning:)

"But Stella had a secret. She apparently never told anyone about the darkness that swirled inside her mind, about the depression that seized her soul."

So grateful for those who share their stories.

"We decided, 'Let's let the community see, in its purest form, what lives affected by suicide and suicidal thinking look like.'"

Just finished @frontlinepbs "Growing Up Poor in America."

The scene where an Athens County mom w/o a car had to stand in a line of vehicles at a school - in the rain - to get her sons' books?

That scene crushed my soul.

Everyone should watch it.

The three families featured are from Athens and Washington counties in Appalachian Ohio and then right here in the city of Columbus.

They are our neighbors.

And my talented former colleague @Brooke_LaValley was a big force in this important project.
Some kid quotes that stuck with me: "Sometimes life just happen and things go the wrong way."

"It's OK to want to get out of this."

"I feel depressed. I feel drained and dark."

Those. Are. Kids.

We must do better.

An important point.

I'm not a politics reporter. Yet when I wrote an important story as a follow to Sullivant Avenue, I started my story w/ a woman afraid to use her name. First thing my boss did was ask me who she was.

Problem is we don't communicate this to readers/viewers.
Aforementioned story. Again, not national security but (only) my boss knew she was and where she lived and could have called her to check if he wanted to.

dispatch.com/news/20200223/…
"It had gotten bad — so, so bad — with all the drugs," said the woman, who agreed to be interviewed only if her identity was protected, because she isn't afraid to live here on Oakley — and she doesn't want to have to be.

SHE DIDN'T WANT TO HAVE TO BE.

UFOs have taken over news this year w/ release of @USNavy videos & a NYT report on clandestine task force. But @RoundtownUFO Society has been entrenched for decades.

"People ask me all the time, ‘Do you believe UFOs exist?’ No, I don’t believe. I know.”

dispatch.com/news/20200902/…
@USNavy @RoundtownUFO You can here Pete Hartinger, a 79-year-old veteran from Circleville, describe his own sightings in detail here:

@USNavy @RoundtownUFO And you can watch as he describes the most famous sighting in Pickaway County (1948) on the land of hog farmer Bruce Stevenson here:

From the archives:

"This is their space to take the next steps in their sober life. That's so important to us, and it would be so important to Sydney that they have a safe space."

Another:

"I have a new sense of power, and I'm grateful to be who I am. I am proud of who I am. It's a struggle still every day — some days are better than others — but ... I grew in huge ways that I will get to carry with me forever."

dispatch.com/news/20190819/…
More hope:

"You can’t just lock people up and expect them to change. You have to do something. We just can’t do it like we always did.”
