New @ONS data give us, for first time, national suicide rates month by month for Covid years 2020 & 2021, compared to earlier years.

Graph shows no rise in these years overall, or any month, or any period of pandemic, including lockdown.

What can we learn from this? Image
It may tell us something about the protective power of social cohesion, of looking out for each other, of community, with its message of acceptance & concern.

If so, we need to hang on to it. It hasn’t looked in strong supply lately.
It may confirm something we saw after the 2008 recession, the life-saving impact of economic support - for people on benefits or in debt or fearing for their jobs & homes.

Particularly important as we head further into the cost of living crisis.

New figures from @ONS show 5,275 suicides registered in England in 2022, a tragic total.

This means the national suicide rate is unchanged since 2018.

But in the detail there are important new figures on young people.

Short 🧵 & TW.
First, your regular reminder that these statistics & graphs represent real lives lost.

And that no suicide rate, high or low, rising or falling, is acceptable.
The new figs show a small ⬇️ in 2022 in youth suicide. However, 2021 is probably an unreliable baseline, inflated by inquests catching up after Covid disruption in 2020.

Better to look not at dates when deaths were registered but when they occurred. ONS has published them too.

Most people have very little idea of the huge and dangerous impacts that #ADHD can have on women and girls.
A thread 1/9
#ADHDWomen #IWD2023 #InternationalWomensDay2023 #InternationalWomensDay #WomensDay #WomensDay2023 Image
It is now clear from diagnoses in later life that #ADHD occurs just as often in women and girls as it does in men and boys.
But women and girls are diagnosed FAR less often, and frequently misdiagnosed 2/9 Image
Women with ADHD are more likely to present outwardly with inattentive traits, because hyperactive/impulsive traits are more likely to be masked and 'internalised'. 3/9 Image

How can students & families tell how well a university is doing on suicide safety?

Does it talk credibly about a mentally healthy campus?

Check student/staff surveys: does experience match rhetoric on bullying, disability, international students, management style?

Are all staff - academic & admin - trained in mental health & #suicideprevention?

So that if a student doesn’t hand in an essay, will they be seen as under-performing or will someone check they’re ok?

Is the physical environment safe?

Is mental health promoted, on exam stress, drugs & alcohol, financial worries & loneliness?

Is it clear how to get help if anxious or distressed - starting with practical advice, then counselling & if needed, referral to NHS?

The aim of this ride is to raise awareness on Mental Welness and health; and the fact that suicide is not the solution to life's problems.
The theme of #WSPD2022 is “Creating hope through action.” It calls for collective action to address suicide prevention. ImageImage
Meaning that all of us - family, friends, co-workers, community, educators, religious leaders, healthcare professionals, politicians & governments - have a crucial role to play and actually can take action to prevent suicides. ImageImageImageImage

NEW: During #SuicidePrevention Awareness month, @Everytown and @nyugrossman analyzed data from 750 cities finding that gun suicide in cities has increased over the past decade and now makes up over 4 in 10 city gun deaths. Here’s what else we found… 🧵
abcnews.go.com/Politics/gun-s…
Cities in states with the strongest gun safety laws have about half the rate of people who die by gun suicide as those in states with the weakest laws, demonstrating the importance of legislative action in preventing gun violence in cities. #SuicidePrevention
Cities with the most gun shops experience nearly 4x higher rates of people who die by gun suicide than those with the fewest gun shops, signaling the importance of expanding cities’ focus beyond illegal guns. #SuicidePrevention

🧵Ever wonder what therapists use for #Suicide prevention? We asked: therapists use current best practices (~90%) BUT ~40% of clinicians endorse contracts for safety, no-harm contracts, &/or no-suicide contracts (not good!) #MentalHealthAwareness link👇 1/7 #psychtwitter
We asked mental health (MH) clinicians & MH allies (teachers, #FirstResponders, peer support) what Best Practices (Crisis Response Planning & Safety Plan) & Contraindicated Practices (contract 4 safety, no-harm contract, &/or no-suicide contract) they use. 2/7
Mental health allies endorsed the Best Practices & Contraindicated Practices at lower rates than mental health clinicians. This leaves room for more training on best practices with a focus on removing interventions that don’t help. #PeerToPeer #PeerSupport 3/7

🧵TW: Suicide #MAiD

*

Not just suicide prevention crisis lines. When my therapist asks “do I have a plan?” How fcked up is it that the biggest part of my answer is now that the canadian govt has a plan for me. She then has to take a somewhat neutral position. Why? I’m disabled.
OTD that MAiD is trending & ppl are so outraged abt what #DisablePeopleToldYou was gonna happen. I don’t have more words for how much assisted suicide laws messed w me or what it’s like to have mental health professionals try to help but ultimately must say — It’s your “choice”
Not once in 6 mnths have I had traditional #SuicidePrevention. Nope. Bc I have #disabilities (and severe pain the healthcare system refuses to relieve) I at best get — well if it’s what you really want u’ll hv to see if the drs who refuse you help will give you a lethal injection

It often hits me like thunderbolt or a punch to the throat when I’ve called suicide prevention lines or my therapist again questions whether she needs to invoke the Mental Health Act, call the cops & have me admitted to the psych ward against my will…
That none of these ppl have the right or moral authority in a country w #AssistedSuicide to prevent me from unaliving myself. I’m totally against the use of law enforcement in mental health crises. For the most part I’m against involuntary admission too. But it goes beyond that.
I’m beginning to wonder, and I assure you that once mental illness becomes a qualifier for assisted suicide many others will too. What exactly is the pt of #SuicidePrevention? What’s the pt of therapy? What’s the pt of voluntary admission? Yea I know the right and proper answers.

Here goes…

In late 2018, I tried to end my life on a tube platform. A woman saw what was happening, and stopped me. At the time, all I could remember about this woman were her earrings — like Qing Dynasty coins. I don’t recall much else to be honest, and I never told anyone. Image
Until one afternoon, about a year later. I was having a beer with my best mate on the Southbank and became aware of a presence. It felt like I was being watched. I’d forgotten my specs at home, but when I turned around, I knew immediately it was her. She was about 100 feet away.
While I’d not told anyone the story, I decided there and then to tell my mate everything. It was difficult to share how I’d been feeling, but he’s the very best. He too turned to look, but she and I were already on our feet. I don’t recall us saying anything… we simply hugged.

Ever wonder what #pubertyblockers really are? They’re a class of drugs known as GnRH agonists, designed for prostate cancer and marketed for everything from endometriosis to #autism. And they have some horrifying side effects. (1/10)
The @US_FDA has received over 25,000 adverse event reports for one GnRH agonist in particular: #Lupron, now the most common drug prescribed as a “puberty blocker” in the US.

@US_FDA In the 2000s, Dr Mark Geier and his son David Geier used GnRH agonists as a snake-oil “cure” for #autism. The result? Kids who were chemically castrated, underdeveloped, possibly sterilized … and still #autistic. Sounds like eugenics, right? Src: archive.is/K0d9u (3/10)

#Suicide by Clinic-Referred #Transgender #Adolescents in the United Kingdom. Great piece here urging us to reflect upon & think about, if evidence based #science is still your thing. Biggs (2022) conclusion asks us to question #medical responsibility. researchgate.net/publication/35…
How do we know if we are acting responsibly when we are offering ‘information’? What information are we offering? What if that information is on risk for #selfharm & #suicide? As a part of our daily #dutyofcare part of the #safeguarding process?
What about if that information is relied upon when we obtain parental consent for intervention with #children & #adolescents? What if that information isn’t true, is inaccurate, exaggerated, inflated, distorted? #science

#LifeOffOfThePsychWard
As mentioned earlier, this a 10 point thread about #SelfHarm and #Suicide.

It comes with a #TriggerWarning.

I will be using my own experience to TRY and educate and encourage reflection, particularly in those who work in #mentalhealth or encounter
1/14
individuals who may self harm.

Those with lived experience may find it unhelpful and may want to not to read it.

So here goes...

1) Self harm can take many forms; and one person can use multiple across their life span. I have engaged in at least 7 different behaviours
2/14
from my teenage years up until now.

2) Just as the method can change so can the function. 15/16 year old me self harmed for punishment - the belief that I had been the reason for my parents separation. I have self harmed in order to feel in control; to release a build up

Today is 100 days since I was first admitted to hospital after taking a mixed overdose. I won't elaborate further.
Since then I have had 3 admissions; 2 to general wards and 1 to a #mentalhealth unit. I spent time as an informal patient and also detained under Section 3 1/21
I was under #Crisis services until last week...
Today is also the first night in 99 that I am spending alone, so to occupy myself and acknowledge the 'milestone', I thought I would reflect on 10 things that I have learnt in that time...
This comes with trigger warnings 2/21
As I will be speaking about #SelfHarm and #Suicide. I also apologise in advance for any poor grammer - I am typing this out on my phone, unable to use a key board.
These are just my own experiences/thoughts/opinions - they are not meant to be generalised. Nor are they based 3/21
