#SuicidePrevention: why I dislike the term, and what it often seems to come down to. How about instead we #Makelifeworthliving. Just some thoughts in a thread.
#SuicidePrevention feels like a negative designed to counteract another negative - that is, thwarting the wish to die. It's focus is to stop us from exerting control, in what may feel like the only meaningful way that is left when we've lost hope.
Removing access to 'means': a well-intentioned strategy, but what will it actually achieve? As for trying to reduce access or eliminate them all? Well.

Read sad story last night about Dr. Bucci, 50 year old Phychology & Brain Sciences Dept. Chairman, at Dartmouth that committed #Suicide 11 months after a lawsuit was filed by graduate #students in his department. He
2/ was NOT accused of sexual misconduct, but named in the suit for knowing about the professors’ inappropriate behavior as the Chair.I share many of the same feelings he expressed to friends and colleagues in his emails before he took his own life like: the case was deeply
3/ personal; reputation had been damaged; physical health diminished; false portrayal of his actions; being blamed unfairly; allegations & process “unfair”; how can they ever undo what they did to me & #wronglyaccused. Similarly, how I had reported the #disability

1/ It’s been 17 years today since I lost my younger brother to #suicide. Since then, so much has changed.
2/ The stigma surrounding #mentalhealth has diminished a little and organisations like @TimetoChange and @heads_together bring a powerful lobby and royal patronage to the topic.
3/ @andysmanclubuk alongside many others has brought safe places for men to talk about their health and mental health across the country. 100s do every week.

#SuicideAwareness I very nearly didn’t make it to 2020. I don’t even know how I’m still here. I need to thank those who helped me up when I fell down. This is a thread about how grateful I am for being alive today.
From 2016 to 2019, I was stalked, sexually harassed, threatened and intimidated by a man from my society where my family and I were renting an apartment because it was close to my college. I was pursuing law.
In early 2018, after the man attempted to run me over with his car and later forcibly grabbed my hand and tried to touch me, my mother and I decided to take action. I was afraid but I knew we had to do something. Ignoring him had not worked.

7 years ago today, I lost all hope & tried to end my life in a hotel room 2 hours from home. I thought the least I could was die far enough from home that my wife wouldn't find my body.

In the past 7 years of recovery from a suicide attempt, I've learned a thing or two.

Here are 7 things that nearly killed me:

1. Mental illness.

This fact so often overlooked. It's an ILLNESS. Not a lack of faith, selfishness, a choice, or a crime.

(Side note: You wouldn't say somebody "committed" cancer. Think about how you talk about suicide.)
2. A lack of boundaries.

I was addicted to busyness, found my worth in my work, and never said no.

I get annoyed when ppl think the solution to India's suicide crisis is having more suicide prevention helplines. Don't get me wrong, they are absolutely necessary, but not enough! Why? Helplines are crisis intervention. Essential, but...1/n
Are we doing anything to prevent the crisis occuring in the 1st place? Ah, I hear you say - it's bcoz of depression & we need better mental health services. True, but depression is a final common pathway, not the cause of the crisis. Bcoz...2/n
~40-50% of suicides in India, there is no diagnosable mental illness (unlike West). So what's causing the crisis? Let's begin with children! If school going children are dying of suicide, shouldn't we ask what is wrong with our education system? And do something about it?... 3/n

@Deedoherty2 Yes. This happens.
@Deedoherty2 @YouTube "During the last 8 years I have met and worked with many people who were deeply suicidal. Some of these people have now, tragically, ended their own lives..
This has led me to explore extensively what is going on especially in the lead-up to suicides."…

It’s all great & good to express yourself about your struggle with mental health, depression, suicide, etc. It’s extremely healthy to open up honestly about your issues, but acknowledgement is only the first step.
You must then move to stop identifying yourself By those issues.
You focus on your positive qualities.
You focus on what you Can do rather than on everything you can’t.
You center yourself IN yourself.
You stop making excuses Every time you think about it.
You stop beating yourself up for not thinking about it because you Stop comparing
yourself to who you’ve been or could be.
You focus on now, and what you have, and what you can do with it.
You take each day for what it’s worth, each day.
You learn to let go.
You learn to open up and accept good into your life.
You learn to love and appreciate yourself and to

I wanted to share my suicide survival story for the first time. Reliving these brutal, painful and private moments isn’t easy. But it is cathartic to share it. So, here goes... #WorldSuicidePreventionDay
The 1st time I attempted suicide was in August of 1996. I was 18 & entering my freshman year of college. Pre-season has just started. I accepted the scholarship to the local college b/c my then-girlfriend told me if I accepted an out-of-State scholarship, that we’d break up
So I stayed in Milwaukee. Well, a month before college actually starts, I find out she was pregnant by some other guy. My world was flipped upside down. I told my assistant coach that I was having suicidal thoughts. He cried, but took me to a mental hospital...

MYTH 2: A person who is suicidal is determined to die
FALSE. Au contraire, suicidal persons are often ambivalent about dying. Emotional support at the right time can help prevent suicide 2/n
MYTH 3: Most suicides happen without warning.

What would National #SuicidePrevention Strategy for India look like:
1. We need to believe it is possible. With concerted effort China has dramatically reduced their suicide rates.
2. We need to implement evidence-based, low cost scalable solutions. They exist.
...contd 1/n
3. Need different strategies for sub-groups. Same solution won't work for students, young women, rural/urban, farmers etc.
4. #suicideprevention is an #intersectoral issue. All solutions do not lie in #health sector; #education #employment, #media #agriculture also imp....2/n
5. Recognise India's suicide epidemiology is different from the West. M:F ratio is 1.5:1 here while it's 4:1 in West. So more women relatively. 50% of suicides impulsive with no mental illness 🇮🇳 while 80% have mental illness in West...3/n

Now reading the the #TopolReview report - Preparing the healthcare workforce to deliver the digital future. It's an illuminating read #DigitalHealth
It's clear that a lot of effort has gone into the #TopolReview - it paints a glorious vision of what healthcare would look like over the next 20 years (for both staff and patients) - enabled by technology such as #genomics, #AI and #robotics
For me the #Topolreview has too narrow a focus. It's been commissioned by healthcare, yet we know that with an aging population, many people with long term conditions have to rely upon #socialcare as well. We need joined up thinking, imho.

Let's talk about suicide. I know it's not fun. But we need to talk about it. I am someone with lived experience. I've lived through those moments when it was almost too much to bear and I searched for methods and wrote out plans. Yet I am still here.

#SuicidePrevention THREAD
I'm glad I'm alive. There have been plenty of days when I didn't feel that way. So it's kind of like a gift. Part of the beauty in this is that I know other people are glad I'm here, too. Probably none of them knows how difficult the journey has been.

Depression is a monster that lives under your bed, crawls out every morning as you eat breakfast, watches from the mirror as you brush your teeth, talks in your ear like a ceaseless prayer in reverse as you try to go about your day.

Being an entrepreneur comes with a sense of freedom & none of the institutional limits on creativity. Yet unless I'm consulting within an organisation or connected to community, it can feel lonely & isolating. Online communities are great for support but it's not enough.
I've seen the negative effects of people investing all their time/energy in networking online & draining group dynamics. I realised that one of my values is to participate in collaborations that involve physical meet ups or at least in the potential of physical meetups. 2/
What can I say? I derive inspiration from in person experiences. So it's not surprising that I notice changes in my thinking patterns & emotional landscape when my interactions are more virtual than physical. It's de-motivating & raises mental health alarm bells 3/
