TW: violence, rape, murder
A thread about women in Russia
1️⃣For those who didn’t know: in Russia, domestic violence is extremely common and the worst thing is that
domestic violence in Russia is completely decriminalized
#feminist #russian #help #феминизм
2️⃣This mean that even children can be in danger despite the fact that the Russian Constitution declares them to be the main value
3️⃣Violence against women is carried out not only by men, but also by the state. There are frequent cases of criminal proceedings against women who used pepper spray or other permitted means of self-defense to people who threatened their life and health verbally and physically
4️⃣We call this "exceeding self-defense" and this is the wording of the article of the criminal code of the Russian Federation. It is applied mainly to women, as you might have guessed
5️⃣ Danger awaits women everywhere: crowded and empty streets, work, elevators, stairs, parking, gender-neutral toilets, homes, public places. Violence is committed anywhere and in any form. Often there is no protection to wait for
6️⃣Russian girls are taught to be good housewives, to be patient and silent. A few popular disgusting sayings: “beats means loves”, “silence is a sign of consent” - if a boy or husband abuses someone, it certainly means that he shows his love. He can’t be an abuser or a rapist
7️⃣A woman is always blamed for everything. If a woman becomes a victim of harassment, abuse, or rape, it’s her own fault. If you see her going to the toilet with a period pad, you should laugh at her, because menstruation is disgusting and women have to hide it
8️⃣Humor is a great thing. I guess many countries produce and translate humor shows, or series. Some of these shows are not so bad. However, most of the jokes connected with women are always misogynous or sexist.
TV screens literally shout “women are stupid, hysterical, weak and good for nothing. They can only spend money and be beautiful”
9️⃣It’s often difficult for a woman to get certain jobs, at least because of her age. Reason is that a woman from 18 to ~30 years old is likely to go on maternity leave at any time, bringing losses to the employer.
1️⃣0️⃣And after 30 a woman becomes an outcast in many areas: she is already old to give birth, old to master the skills necessary for any job, old to start a family because she is not so young and beautiful anymore. Seriously
1️⃣1️⃣Also there’s a list of professions that are prohibited for women: rt.com/russia/457651-…
1️⃣2️⃣The territory of Russia is huge. There are many different nationalities with different cultures. In some regions as the Caucasian women sometimes are perceived as pets. Daughters might be sold to their husbands.
Rape is considered as a disgrace for the entire family of the victim, who is usually blamed for what happened.
1️⃣3️⃣In addition, there is such a thing as honor killing in the Caucasus. "Honor killing" is an act of violence, even murder committed by male family members against female family members who they believe have brought dishonor to the family.
1️⃣4️⃣The reasons for such murders can be many: refusal to marry, adultery, desire to divorce her husband, disobedience. And the reasons may be even unfounded rumors.
1️⃣5️⃣TW❗️❗️❗️
I will quickly mention that in some republics on the territory of Russia there’s still such a thing as child and female circumcision
1️⃣6️⃣One of the main social problems in Russia is feminism. No kidding, a big percentage of the population of Russia thinks it destroys family values, teaches children the wrong things and morally corrupts the society. They exclaim that feminism is not necessary at all.
1️⃣7️⃣Let me remind you some people believe it’s obligatory to be a silent wife. They value patriarchy and decriminalized violence. The police won’t come to protect you from your husband/boyfriend/brother, but they will come to see your dead body.
1️⃣8️⃣Even more nonsense is being poured out on women who are trying to change something. Those who are trying to achieve justice are fighting against gender stereotypes, consumer attitudes towards women, misogyny, sexism and objectification. Those who are protecting and supporting
1️⃣9️⃣Finally let me mention divorce proceedings. In 90% of cases, ex-husbands do not pay child alimony. Not so long ago, Russia broke the record for avoiding court-ordered provision.
2️⃣0️⃣In order not to be unfounded, here is the most high-profile case to date: meduza.io/en/feature/201…
