Around 5 years ago I first encountered the vitriolic attacks on #women asserting their right to politically self-organise from so-called trans-rights activists in a socialist group I associated with at the time. Having been active in radical left... /1

True story: In the 1980s, one of my neighbours was a trans woman. I knew she was trans because I'd been in the same queer youth group as her girlfriend (#Edinburgh is like that). Otherwise, she looked just like any other lesbian: no make up, short hair, comfortable shoes, etc. /1
One day, I saw her leaving the house & she was all dressed up in femme clothes - skirt, high heel shoes, make-up, etc. "Job interview?" I asked sociably, when I saw her to speak to next. "You were all dragged up," I explained.

She looked embarrassed. /2
"I had an appointment with my psychiatrist. He wants to see me dressed as a woman or he says I'm not taking my transition seriously."

I stare at her, horrified down to my dyke soul. /3

1/ Dear #SocialJustice warrior,

You are #woke but you're not awake.

Since the beginning of time there have been those who seek to gain power or maintain power. This is a sad fact of life. There is truth to the #GameOfThrones
2/ For those of you who are #woke yet asleep-

There are those who powerless & become bitter.
There are those who are powerful & become greedy.
There are those who fight for the powerless & become caught in the powerful's web.
3/ You say you're #woke because you fight for #SocialJustice -causes that seem fair and equitable

-against inequality, rich vs. poor, white vs. black, male vs. female...

That sounds great.

Until the light filters beneath your lids & you begin to ask questions...

Hi @torontolibrary,

An event has been announced in your main branch that appears to intend to make the arguments that gender identity is fiction, our #HumanRights laws are bad policy, and #transgender women are not women:

@CheriDiNovo @StraightLGBT @VPL

eventbrite.ca/e/gender-ident…
TPL policies were put in place that prohibit the rental of your facilities for events intended, or likely, to result in discrimination on prohibited grounds. I will delve further into this below.

You also have policies prohibiting discrimination "of any kind" on your premises.
In 2019, the BC Human Rights Tribunal ruled in "Oger v Whatcott BCHRT 2019 (7)" that displaying material advertising an intention to discriminate on explicitly-prohibited grounds or urging others to do so was prohibited discrimination.

The case ruling: canlii.ca/t/hzdgk

Here is my rant of the day:
Why is @FeminismInIndia a sham ?

1) I was raised by a #feminist father. He went out of his way to make sure I get the best education possible even though we are refugees in our own country. Yes, I am a victim of #terrorism in #Kashmir.

1 of n
2) I was never treated differently than my brother. You know why ? Because we are #Kashmirihindus and we treat everyone equally.
3) I presided over yagnas because I was the eldest child of the family. My gender had no bearing on that.
4) I was sent to a gurukul style school

2/n
5) I was sent to schools that taught me Shrimad bhagwat Geeta in addition to #kalaripayattu (ancient Indian martial art) for my protection.
Why ? Because my father din want me to fall prey to #islamicterrorists of #kashmir and get raped or murdered. He wanted me safe.

I’m thrilled to announce that I am now a board member for @AboutFreedomInc, #MadisonWI’s leading queer, feminist racial justice organization. I’m wearing the shirt I got at my first board meeting today!
Freedom Inc. is a #queer & #feminist led #Black and Southeast #Asian organization which focuses on leadership development, community organizing, particularly among youth, elders and survivors of violence.
I have been so impressed with their work in my 2 years in Madison & was thrilled when I was asked to join their board. This is one way I am working to bridge the gap between academia & activism in my life and use the privileges of my position as a tenure track prof.

#SundayRead by Eyala is back by popular demand (well, kinda: @Asmaaouu asked and I'd never dare say no to her).

As usual, this week I've read a ton of articles about women's rights and #feminism (especially in Africa) this week. Let me share 5 pieces that stood out for me.
In the seven years I lived in #Senegal I often wondered, where are the queer women? I figured they were being silenced, but this intriguing piece by @africasacountry suggests that queer women's silence may be a strategic choice.

And you call yourself a feminist.

Please take a minute and ask yourself why you don’t seem to have room in your feminism for ppl who need more than one abortion (and who aren’t ashamed). There are all kinds of reasons ppl might need >1 abortion (I feel a thread coming on).
Ppl who can get #pregnant can spend >35 years of reproductive life trying not to get pregnant. If typical use failure rates for #contraceptive methods like the pill or patch are ~9%, you’re almost inevitably going to have at least one failure in a lifetime.
Even if ppl have an average # of children, that’s still 30+ years of needing reliable #birthcontrol to avoid pregnancy.

The Police use force nearly eight times more against Māori than against Pākehā. Māori are around twelve times more likely to have a dog set on them by the cops. @nzpolice have a whakapapa that can be traced back to the colonial forces here to violently subdue Māori.
Remember earlier this month when @nzpolice proudly tweeted about their #feminist constable who ran a Japanese internment camp during WWII?

newshub.co.nz/home/new-zeala…
The police propaganda machine has been cranking content out hard in the wake of the Christchurch terror attack. But the police don't exist to keep all people safe. The police never considered white supremacy and extreme right wing organising a threat. This is teko.

Thread: I know it’s a small thing, but I just watched the new episode of @GreysABC where a patient character uses they/them #pronouns & Richard (@JamesPickensJR) struggles with it initially. While Jackson (@iJesseWilliams) doesn’t because, #WokeBae, duh.

popculture.com/tv-shows/2019/…
I know that for some viewers, this may have been their first introduction to #genderqueer & #nonbinary people or the concept of asking someone’s pronouns. It’s been happening in #queer & #feminist spaces for years. But this is mainstream. Majorly mainstream.
And for many genderqueer & non-binary folks, this may be the first time they’ve seen part of their experience represented on screen outside of smaller stage media*

If your feminism doesn’t include supporting sex worker rights, than you aren’t a real feminist. Here are 10 reasons why decriminalizing sex work is a real feminist issue. refinery29.com/amp/en-us/2016…
Prostitution is absolutely just another job, as is stripping, pro-domming, cam modeling, and porn performing. These jobs should absolutely be decriminalized and de-stigmatized. #sexwork #sexworkiswork #sexworkersvote
Many intelligent, well-informed self-described feminists believe sex work should never be decriminalized. In fact, the decriminalization of sex work is perhaps the single most divisive subject within feminism today. #sexwork #SexWorkIsWork #sexworkersvote

This the last tweet I’m going to engage with specific #DezNat things. I’ll still call out hateful individuals, but really this is shite behavior. Don’t try and deny it.Most of y’all are homophobic, misogynistic, transphobic, racist individuals — whether you “think” you are or not
Feel free if you’ve received hate from #Deznat to post it here. I figure we need a thread about it. #callthemout
Jus because someone calls out your shitty behavior doesn’t make them hateful. @lennie_mennie And see how deftly he dismisses the harassment of feminists and the meme that was made? #misogyny

[short thread]: if you're looking for a good analysis of why TERFism is so much more widespread and virulent in the UK than the US, you should check out this @nytopinion piece: nytimes.com/2019/02/07/opi… #trans #transgender #LGBTQ #feminism #feminist
...interestingly this is 2nd piece I've seen suggesting that UK TERFism grew out of UK skeptics movement from the 90s/00s. the other is this essay, which is great read (but please media outlets, don't format your articles so they cannot be saved as PDFs!):
theoutline.com/post/6536/brit…
...another factor cited in the aforementioned @nytopinion piece is British history of colonialism, which dovetails with what I said in this thread from back in October about how central intersectionality is in contemporary US feminism...

Thread for my white #feminist friends (of all genders)

Content: Sexual violence, racism

There is a racial divide on social media regarding #SurvivingRKelly
Most black folks I know have posted about the docuseries in the last few days (thankfully black people in my networks are expressing support of the victims of sexual abuse & coercion though their posts suggest to me that is not the case with their entire friends network)
In contrast, nearly all white folks I know are not even acknowledging the docuseries, the #RKelly conversation, nothing. This divide/contrast reminds me that white people are not required to know what’s happening to and among black folks.

This piece is getting a lot closer to key issues we discuss in the #anthropology of #reproduction. A few key issues I would like to note.
1) The concept of #stratifiedreproduction is helpful here. Originally described by Shellee Colen, #stratifiedreproduction describes systematic ways in which some people's #reproduction is valued & nurtured, while others' are devalued & hindered.
2) We've been working w/ this concept since it was put at the center of our emerging field of the #anthropology of #reproduction in 1995 when Faye Ginsburg & Rayna Rapp published the pivotal edited volume "Conceiving the New World Order" tinyurl.com/y9c4jjv3

...I saw some wild claims about my piece yesterday, so I will attempt to clarify here. my first point: there is a long history of feminist debates and discourses regarding trans ppl. Talia Bettcher discusses this in her critique of that Stock piece: dailynous.com/2018/05/30/tab…
...as someone who has played a small part in that history, and who spends much of my time in feminist settings, I can tell you that the "feminist debate" regarding trans people is largely settled, as most contemporary feminist recognize that...
