Love thy neighbor.
All neighbors. No exceptions.

If I really hated them then I just did not hang out w them 🤷🏻‍♀️. No hateful speech or hateful laws.
3/ Most of my family in Texas is religious, republican, & single issue voters. Anti abortion, no matter what. Even if M@ga Trumpism breaks all the other 9 commandments.

I hate that I now have to discuss forced-birth issues w beloveds.

To celebrate #IWD2022, we reflect on some of the work that we have undertaken to highlight the impact of gender inequality on peace and security and to encourage continued progress towards equal inclusion of #women in policy and programming.

rusi.org/explore-our-re…
The development of the Women, Peace and Security #WPS agenda in the international peace and security community has highlighted the need to include more #women.

Below, @J_White692 explains why we need more women in counter-terrorism policy and programming.
rantt.com/why-we-need-mo…
Our @Rusi_Terrorism team work across their projects to gather evidence on the role #gender plays in how and why people become radicalised.

Check out one of the projects by @EmsWinterbotham and @lizzypearson below.

Lets meet famous feminists, understand what feminism is all about

#Feminist No 1
Helen Sullinger says 'We must work to destroy (marriage)...The end of institution of marriage is a necessary condition for the liberation of women
#Feminist No 2
Vivian Gornick
"Housewife is an illegitimate profession. The choice to serve and to be protected and plan towards being a family maker is a choice that shouldn't be. The heart of a radical feminist is to change that.
3. Mary Jo Bane
" To raise children with equality, we must take them away from families and communally raise them."

As funders hold critical conversations on how to best support #Ukraine, here's a 🧵for #philanthropy on where to start from👇🏽

p.s. updated list of #Feminist #Young #LBTQI #Disability justice orgs is here bit.ly/3sxtjOV
Whats needed -- Sensitivity and understanding of rapidly changing local contexts and how grassroots level organizing works (at the moment but also before the war) in order to provide an adequate response to the emergency in #Ukraine
Also, active listening to the needs of feminist, queer, disability rights organizers to deeply understand what kind of funding and the quality of support is essential to consistently address the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine

In a few short days, we've moved from pundits mournfully intoning platitudes about the terrible return of war to Europe (completely ignoring the 90s, of course) to shrieking for a great power war and explaining nukes aren't that big a deal anyway.

This is political psychosis.
Actual psychopath in the wild here.
Of course, the eternal weathervane of midwit opinion is on board too.

Good morning! In about 10 minutes, we will be expanding on our discussion of Individual Causes of Delinquency by looking at #gender & #delinquency

I look forward to your questions & following along. How do you identify?

#CRJ107 #MoraineValley
The term #gender is complex, so what elements of delinquency are we going to examine in this discussion?

We are going to try to answer the question as to why gender differences are significant in the study of delinquency

#CRJ107 #MoraineValley Image
I think it is essential to acknowledge that gender identity is much more complex than differences between male & female offending

How anti-choice organizations are slowly making their way into respectability: a 🧵. I’ve been witnessing the slow legitimization of #antichoice orgs in global spaces and conversations and this is concerning. 10 years ago, no one save the similarly conservative would have been
Caught dead talking and strategizing with them. It’s 2022, #SRHR are under severe backlash and constant threat, yet the artisans of said backlash have access to mainstream strategic conversations and briefings. They now benefit from several platforms from which they can reinforce
Their anti #SRHR messages, in seemingly all impunity. To me this highlight two things: how conservative populist gvts have relied on these orgs to access power and rewarding them for their support by giving them time and space and how these orgs have instrumentalized human rights

Convince me that artificial reproductive technologies (ARTs) r the right choice for society & individuals to pursue rather than reducing environmental & other risk factors for #infertility & promotion of ethical #fostering & #adoption.

Convince me that having biological issue is worth ART's tremendous expense & medical risks.
If you tell me infertility is causing marital discord, I tell you that that marriage may have bigger problems.

This is going to be controversial, but here goes.
Although I do believe in #GenderEquality, I don't consider myself to be a #feminist.
I will explain the reasons why in this thread... (1/x)
First let's look at the Meriam-Webster definition of the word...

"[A] belief in and advocacy of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes expressed especially through organized activity on behalf of women's rights and interests."

(2/x)
This definition: ✔️
However, the people that call themselves "feminists" don't always reflect this reality.
Even if you are committed to improving the rights of women, you might very well not be a feminist.
Why? (3/x)

Safe streets for women #ReclaimTheseStreets #ReclaimTheNight what can be done? When I was researching my book on feminist activism & particularly Reclaim the Night marches, women often gendered public space as default male. Women would say that RtN marches 'took back' 'took over'
'reclaimed' public space in their town/city centres. So much concrete, steps, bridges etc. Likewise, when on RtN marches, hostile men watching often receive these protests in exactly the same way, as incursion, trespass, invasion, takeover. Many times I've been on RtN & heard...
hostile men bystanders shout stuff like'get in the kitchen' 'go home' 'these are our streets'. So women are not wrong in perceiving public space as default male. We will not end sexualised male violence against women overnight, but we can change this messaging by changing cities.

#UniOfLahore scene was created by plan & design,now this incident will take over all the other important news in media/social media. The so-called #Liberal #Feminist groups of #Pakistan will start these trends;
1. You can rape a girl in Madrassa but you can’t propose a girl @ Uni
2. You can kill ppl in Uni (examples of #Mashal will be used) but you can’t propose a boy at Uni
3. Pro-Taliban apologists are against Love
Etc...
Then the news/tweets of Threats to the lives of the boy & girl start circulating & a new debate will start all over
Then the so-called Women’s Rights groups, Human Rights groups will start a campaign with “Save the lovebirds” slogan & a new drama will start and protection will be demanded for the couple, anti groups will also come out, PR companies will be hired etc...
We know all these games!

1/ This thread reflects on a recurring problem in discussing the history of #animalstudies, critical animal studies, & human-animal studies. It’s #misogyny. Here’s the jist: feminists & feminist ideas are devalued or ignored only to see our ideas appropriated while we disappear.

*THREAD* (1/n) Often feminists don't agree to the fact that men in India suffer due to gender biased laws- in favor of women. Argument is, there are no statistics which suggest that Indian men suffer. So there is no need for gender neutral laws or a national commission for men.
(2/n)Well the statistics were always there but mostly ignored. I've collated some stats from NCRB data for Crime in India 2019. Despite these facts, people still play the 'women victim', 'abla nari' card. Let us look at what the statistics say -
(3/n) Analysis and approach - 1. For simplicity, the focus of this analysis will only be on crime against women. 2. Crimes like IPC 506 (Criminal intimidation), IPC 354C (Voyeurism), IPC 354D (Stalking), IPC 406 (Criminal breach of trust) have been left out in this analysis-

What do we do on Sundays? (I mean, before the cleaning, cooking, stopping kids' squabbles, and trying to crack the code of how to fit both work & homeschooling in the coming week). We read! So here's #EyalaReads, your recommended reads about #Africa #WomensRights & #Feminism.
"Grief is a cruel kind of education." Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie wrote how grieving for her father, but also about who he was. It's a beautiful and moving piece. Uncomfortably intimate at times, especially because she has been so private so far.

"Volatile times call for complex and imaginative cultural stories." Read @MsAfropolitan's thoughts about African #feminism and afropolitanism today. (Blogging tip: see how she links back to her own blog when she guest-posts? We learn oh!)

Another Sunday, another #EyalaReads! Setting time aside on Sunday mornings to go through my bookmarks is my version of Auntie Maxine's "reclaiming my time". Sharing a selection of great reads about #Africa #WomensRights and #Feminism with you all is the icing on the cake. Enjoy!
"The stigmatization of single motherhood is a patriarchal strategy used to police women into heterosexual submission." @Married2_Coffee wrote about single mothers in #SouthSudan and you should read this!

@monaeltahawy started a newsletter! It's called #Feminist Giant and it's dope. Of the few issues I've received so far, this one is my favorite. It's about the Beijing conference, #Covid_19, and "the Multiplicity of Fuckeries." Sign up!

2020 truly is the year of weird: good or bad, everything feels strange. I'm grateful for the sense of normalcy #EyalaReads brings on the Sundays I'm able to curate it, and for you for reading with me. Enjoy this week's roundup of my fav reads on #Africa #WomensRights & #Feminism!
If you read only one thing this week, this is the one. Jesmyn Ward wrote her heart out in @VanityFair and I felt everything: the grief, the fatigue, the anger, the hope. Read this, it is magnificent.

Ta-Nehisi Coates did a spectacular job as a guest-editor of The Great Fire, @VanityFair's September issue, about race relations and #racism in the US. I loved the interview Angela Davis gave @ava. Great insights for us African feminists, too.

Eyala's third season kicks off today! I'm so excited to share this interview with Kenyan human rights lawyer Kavinya Makau aka @kaviemakau, a #feminist who preaches the Lorde's word and practices it too! Don't miss this great conversation.

"I’ve always been clear that my view as a #feminist and a human rights defender is that there is no hierarchy of rights." @kaviemakau defines #feminism for herself and explains how she goes about embodying her values in her daily life.

I met @kaviemakau 10 years ago as a young professional with a huge task to handle. She gave me great advice then about #selfcare and #feminism. Here, she shares more useful tips, incl. around what I call #feminist impostor's syndrome. Read it!
